NWFlyer 2 #1 August 28, 2007 Got home tonight ... pulled out some baby romaine, tossed some strawberries, walnuts, and goat cheese on it and made a tasty salad. On the one hand ... I used the plastic container that the salad came in to make the salad. On the other hand ... I bought salad that came in a plastic container. On the one hand ... it was organic. On the other hand ... it was trucked up here from California. Sigh. The more I read about how out of whack our food production and distribution system is, the more conscious I find myself of the choices I make every time I shop. I get on kicks where I read a bunch of books on the same theme ... lately it's been food. Read Fast Food Nation a few years ago, and in the past two months I've read The Omnivore's Dilemma (Michael Pollan); Animal Vegetable Miracle (Barbara Kingsolver) and Twinkie, Deconstructed (Steve Ettlinger). Enough to scare you off processed food, that's for sure, not that I ate that much of it any more anyway. And enough to make me much more conscious of what I buy. But also enough to make me realize how skewed things are towards convenience. And how much financial incentive there is for me to support The Way Things Are (tm). Anyway... just rambling; this topic has a lot of political undertones so it may not last long here in Bonfire."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

NWFlyer 2 #3 August 28, 2007 Quote So what does this have to do with being an omnivore? It's like a book, dude. You should try reading sometime. NWFlyer 2 #5 August 28, 2007 QuoteI might. Does the book answer the question? Has to do with being omnivorous because I, as a human being (yes, yes, I really AM human) am an omnivore. I may not *choose* to eat omnivorously, but our bodies have adapted so that I can. And yes, the book answers the question, too."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Amazon 7 #9 August 28, 2007 I grew a lot of blueberries this year too. I am STILL getting some ripening up..and my little greenhouse... has some really nice TARO root...Apples are coming on soon... and I have the fresh garlic I grew.. huge things... but NUMMERS on fish and other meat. When I put in the new fence... I will have a better garden next year.. but for now... the horsies can eat right over the old fence.... so no goodies from that part of the yard this year...
