Wow, I got a wild hair today!

Recommended Posts

I have always wanted to be an EMT and this morning on my way to work, it really struck me to pursue this. So I called the local college today, today was the last day for applying for this semester, I got enrolled, went and paid for my class, and am going to get my text book after work today. Monday night I will start First Responder class! I just spoke to the instructor and he said I will be all set to take my board in May and go to work! I am so EXCITED! This has been a back burner dream for 15 years! woohoo! For it being so last minute, everything is going so smoothly! Wish me luck!

That's kinda messed up. At my local Community college you can get into an EMT class with no prior First responder training. In fact my state is phasing out the CFR very slowly. EMT at my school was a seven credit course. It was a blast. Welcome to the best job you'll ever hate

Thanks! I cant wait to get working in this field. I truly love helping people... I spoke to our County EMS office to just get more info (all EMS workers are county unless they work for a private Life FLight or something around here.) He told me that they work 3 days a week, 2 15's and a 10 and start just under 26,000 a year as an EMT B, but get two raises a year. Sounds good to me! The biggest thing Im worried about is once I get on the job and second guessing my training. I hope that doesnt sound stupid....

second guessing yourself is normal for awhile....any good service will pair you with an experienced partner. The best EMT's and medics out there realize their license is not a license to "practice medicine or save lives".. it's a license to learn!! You have chosen a profession where learning and updating your knowledge and skills are a regular on going part of the job. After 18 years as a medic for a very busy department I still get surprised and learn from patients on a regular basis.............Have fun in class and keep the enthusiasm going.

I love patient care, but I find that EMS does not pay well enough to support anything where I live. I am presently working to upgrade my EMT to and EMT Critical Care EMT-I in some states. From there finish my degree and then look at getting into a PA school

good luck!

sometimes its just best to do what you dream off.. i've jumped into a new, not very comfortable job, but believe me, moneywise it really pays off.. if EMT does something for you, its kinda the best thing.. still, besides skydiving n'all..
