Sigh...I just don't understand

Recommended Posts

[:/] How can a person abandon their pet? You take an animal into your home, take care of it, raise it, treat it as family, and then when a medical bill arises that THE OWNER FRICKIN' caused, they abandon their animal. [:/]

A poodle mix was in hospital last night. One of the owners had run over it with the car on Sunday and waited until Monday >:( to get the dog into the ER. The dog has a broken hip. The owners said they couldn't afford a lot of money to fix the dog so the surgeon agreed to do the surgery for cheap (as in $1500 less than it should have been). The owners put a small deposit down ($150) and then never came back to pick up the dog.

I just don't get it. How can people do that? It's the 3rd animal thus far to be abandoned at the ER since I've been there. And apparently, there are quite a few that get abandoned every year at the ER. [:/]

I know it'll happen more. I've seen a lot more than I've ever mentioned on this forum that bothers me more than words will ever be able to say.

I will never get used to it though. To get used to it would be to stop caring. And if I stop caring, I need to take a step back and re-evaluate a lot of things.

I dont understand either, I am a true animal lover and take in rescue horses from time to time, since I have the land to spare. (I have 3 of my own). My latest rescue was a 22 yro blind POA. The former owners did want here her anymore, b/c they didnt think she could "work". I was skeptical about taking a blind horse, but she is so sufficent. She has yet to run into anything. (She is totally blind, full cataracts on both eyes). I think people in general dont understand the expense that comes with a pet. Then when something happens, they have the attitude the animal is just that and expendable. HOW WRONG! If half the humans in the world, had the dedication and love that most animals have for us people, the world would be a much nicer place.

Some people "like" having a pet around and some people "love" their pets....... Some will spend the money and others will go get another one because its cheaper.

I didnt mean it like that Cora, sorry.
I meant that if you let it break your heart every time the job may get to be to much for you to handle.
I hope it never does.

No worries.

Every day makes me want to do this more. Every time I see an animal in pain or not feeling well, I want to help more than I currently do.

And, seeing an animal that's been abandoned and the way the people that I work with as well as others that come in that are willing to adopt these animals and care for them, I won't let it break me...just will need to vent every once in awhile.

A lot of people don't think of their pets as things with emotions and feelings.

They think of their pets as objects that they own.

If you paid $0 for something that needs a $1500 repair job, and you could just go get another one for free, you throw it away.

It's the sad truth, but a lot of people just don't care about their animals very much.

I "had" to abandon my sweet lil kitty....

My older sister got these two lil kittens for my mother in 1991 when my father had his stroke. I was stationed in South Dakota and was moving alone... so took the two lil beasties to be my only friends in a vast open state.... Those two cats helps me keep my sanity (mostly) and my goal was to keep them happy and loved.

Then fast forward to this new house that was bought about 3yrs ago. When the house was bought, the male was VERY sick and would have multiple accidents (projectile vomiting and diarrhea)... deal was made to have them stay in the basement cuz the carpet is a light brown. He had a stroke and I helped him go to sleep about 2yrs ago. I waited 18mos for the release of her from the basement, but that was not forthcoming...

So I took her up to Wisconsin to live with my sister and her family where she could get constant attention and love and hugs and kisses and not just confined to a cold and remote section of the house....

I was not happy.... [:/]

That's not abandonment. That's making sure kitty was cared for, even if it meant having someone else do it.

Some people are poor and only make $300 a pay check or less. Animals can bring a lot of happiness to poor people but personally I don't think they should go into deep debt to pay a vet bill and believe me if they are poor they aren't going to have a big savings account.

If people have the money sure they should do whatever they can for the pet but common sense says that people can't always cough up big bucks to put the vets son through college. Society is hard on poor people and most if not all of the poor folk would do the right thing if they had the money.
Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.

Cora, this is a good time to re-tell my 'Teddy' story.

A woman in town witnessed a person driving a van down her road. The van stopped and the person literally through a black lab out the door and took off.>:( The woman temporarily took in the dog. She posted a notice of adoption at the local country store. My sister in law spotted it and by the end of the day, she, my brother and their 4 kids were the proud new family of 'Teddy'. Teddy was a big mush of a dog. He was so gentle, playful and extremely well-trained. I would babysit him when they would go away and I would have so much fun with him.

After about a year, Teddy became extremely ill. The vet told them that he was loaded with cancer and that it probably be best if they put him to sleep. This was really hard for them to bear and asked the vet if it would hurt Teddy if they took a couple days to think about it. The vet OK'd it and Teddy went home. The following evening, the whole family were watching TV. Teddy suddenly walked into the den where they were and one by one he layed his head briefly on each of their laps. Each person gave Teddy a hug or a pat. Teddy then walked out of the room. A few moments later, my sister in law realized something was up and she went to look for Teddy. He apparently went into the laundry room (his favorite room), lied down and passed away.:(

We all take comfort in knowing that Teddy's last year was filled with love and he returned that love...even to his last breath.:)

$150!!!!!! Hell I spent that much last weekend when I sent my pooch to the groomer to get cut, cleaned, nails trimmed. They even painted them. :D She gets better treatment and the hair guy then I do. I dont know how people can abuse there pets like that. This was my wifes dog when we first started dating. So I guess it was like a 2 for 1 package. I wouldnt give her up for anything. She's my furry friend.B|

And here is where I have an issue. I know how much love and happiness a pet can bring. However, if you can not afford to take care of a pet properly, then you should not have it. I know there are situations where life changes. If that happens and you can no longer afford to take care of your pet, instead of abandoning it, there are no-kill shelters that will take the animal in and find it a home. Just dropping off your pet and leaving...>:(

kbordson - You did not abandon your kitty. You got it to a home that could take care of it. That's not abandonment. Hugs!

Muenkel - Thank you! Those stories always make me cry and be happy at the same time. It's nice to know that the dog's last days were filled with love.

AggieDave - I know it happens to children and it pisses me off just as much. I could never be a human doctor/cop/etc. that deals with that situation.

Lawrocket - yeah...I know. But, I, also, know there are a lot of good people as well. We already found two dogs that were abandoned homes. And, I know my co-workers as well as the surgeons/surgeon's staff that work with us will help find this little one a loving home as well.

Rookie - I know. And the surgery and overnight care plus all the meds - the owners were only going to be charged $500...instead of the $2000 that it should have cost. The surgeon deliberately took a pay cut (these docs are paid only on commission) so that this dog could be helped. [:/]

It's so sad. I did a really dumb thing about a year ago and gave my pooch some Advil which made her sick. Off to the vet doc I go. She stayed overnight. About 36 hours in all and that bill came out to about $700. I would have paid $2,000 to get my pooch back in good shape. What can I say, I'm a dog loverB|
