Nightingale 0 #26 September 4, 2007 LOL. I called the zoo. Elephants have an ideal weight gain during pregnancy of 500-600 lbs. The average gestation period for an elephant is 659 days (around 22 months, as opposed to a human's 9 month gestation). At 11 weeks gestation, the embryo weighs only 1.5 grams, and at birth, the calf weighs around 300 pounds. We couldn't find any statistics for 7 months, but at around 6 months, the embryo weighs about 19 grams (around half a pound), and the weight gain by the mother is negligable at that point. Does that answer your question?

jimmytavino 16 #31 September 5, 2007 These African Bush Elephant females live 150 yards away from our house. One was expecting....... in 2005-2006 ,,,, it was noted in the local media that the newborn would weigh between 200 and 300 pounds,,, but sadly the mom lost the infant in the course of delivery.....the entire community was saddened by that... this site......www.senecaparkzoo.org ... provides insight details and statistics about many animals including our elephants...all of whom are literally living "in our back yard"......Apparently adults get up to,, and over 10,000 pounds.....they ARE majestic and fun to watch from up close... good question....interesting answers jimmy... neighbor of the pachyderms

happythoughts 0 #36 September 5, 2007 QuoteIs that an African elephant or a European elephant ? Don The easiest way to tell is the size of the ears. African elephants have larger ears. (Insert some Darwinian theory about needing the extra cooling surface because of the African heat.) Indian elephants have smaller ears, but are preferred by public facilities like Busch Gardens because they are generally more domesticated. (Of course, BG advertises everything as "African...", but nobody realizes.)

lawrocket 3 #39 September 5, 2007 There are a lot of similarities between elephanta and pregnant women... For example, the ankles. The rear legs of an elephant walk with roughly the same gait. Both are quick to anger and will stomp your sorry ass at a moment's notice. You can hear them bellow from 1 mile on a clear night. My wife is hotter than your wife. lisamariewillbe 1 #42 September 5, 2007 Quote I just didn't want Don to know that My bad... I had no idea what he was referring to at all On a side note, when I was at Jax zoo, Michael Jacksons elephant who he had donated to the zoo wouldnt mate naturally (hed just knock his girls over, like elephant tipping) so they had to teach him to masturbate (he was a wild elephant, helped to keep the lines clean) well, I got to view it one day because I had to then take the stuff to the airport. Its a odd process but elephants give out less sperm then a human. Yup that was my whole point of this long run on sentence, elphants have less sperm. lisamariewillbe 1 #48 September 5, 2007 Quote If we can't protect the kids from Michael Jackson, can we atleast protect the elephants? Okay , personally I dislike Michael Jackson to a degree that would be similar to disgust but on the Ali bit, he did something right. First off I dont agree that he should have taken Ali from the wild but once he did that, he provided a great home for him. When Ali hit must (sexual maturity) he realized that he could not contain the bull elephants behaviour nor provide a safe home for him. So he sent his people to visit zoos around the country. Jax zoo had just built a ERD which aided in providing daily check ups and made it to where the elephants could recieve medical care easier. In essence they had the best place for him. Jackson donated him and included the rights for the zoo to breed him and gave up his rights to the offspring. Ali's sperm is much needed as it is hard to take an animal from the wild and so many zoos have inbreeding issues. The sad part was that Ali was at a curious age and after living at the zoo about a year he got injured because as the hydralic doors were closing he stuck his nose out and well 6 inches had to be amputated. African elephants eat different then Asian, but because of that Ali didnt have the right muscles anymore to feed himself. However he was housed with both asian and african and he adapted by learning to swirl his food as the asians did. He would have died had he not relearned how to eat and all because he saw the asian elephants for so long. He was a fasinating animal, so funny, I could talk about him all day. And well apperently I can hijack a thread because of him. You aint lived till you witnessed an elephant being trained to masturbate and then watch him be rewarded for his sperm by giving him a pickle Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this Sudsy Fist: but you're looking damn sudsydoable in this
