ltdiver 3 #1 September 5, 2007 A friend sent this .wmv to me today. All I could do is stare, unblinking. All I could say was "Wow!", in hushed tones. Take a look. I've never heard of this kind of job. http://scottrope.typepad.com/scott_rope/files/HIGHPOWERWORKER.wmv ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

My friend Jonno flys the heli for that same job and he tried to explain it to me but now that I've seen your video clip, I now have a better understanding of what he does...Scarey. _________________________________________

RkyMtnHigh 0 #4 September 5, 2007 Yeah. My friend said that "a LOT can go wrong and quick..especially with weather changes". Seems like the guy on the wire is like a monkey and the heli pilot needs to hover until the maintenance is done. It's hard to fly and maintain that low. I'm not sure if Jonno is still checking this site but it'd be cool if he came on and clarified the role and how it works. I also have another heli pilot friend Bob who might be able to clarify. Regardless, looks scarey to me. _________________________________________

piratemike 0 #7 September 5, 2007 I kind of like the quote at the end. "Theres only three things that I've been afraid of, Electricity, heights, and women. And I'm married to." That is a very interesting job.
LouDiamond 1 #8 September 5, 2007 There was a whole show on this on the TLC awhile back and you get to see the whole process where they not only clean the wires of bird shit but the also x-ray them for stress cracks using a portable x-ray machine. All of this from the side of the helo. I know Jonno pretty good and he has shown me some of the shots people have taken of him flying his helo next to the wires with a dude on the outside. All I can say is that if you didn't know better you would think it was a "before the accident" picture as he hovers a few feet from high tension wires while a dude either scraps or x-rays the wire. I am fairly familiar with the helicopter as I have hung outside of one many times at work while it flew around, they are incredible machines and the pilots are shit hot at putting it in tight spaces but I doubt I could get any of them to fly as close as I have seen Jonno fly his helo to high tension wires. The thing that gets me is they don't just do it for a few seconds, they do miles of wire this way while the guys x-rays the wire. Needless to say, they get paid very well and have good insurance policies "It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

ltdiver 3 #16 September 6, 2007 Quote how did all your home projects turn out? Vinyl windows turned out great! Savings are very apparent with the Edison bills this summer. Opening current bill right now: I've cut the bill in half! With this record setting heat this summer! Last year-this month: 438 kWh used. This year-this month: 200 kWh used. Only $10! The dry creek bed now has a working waterfall/pond at one end. Just finished that this past week. Now I'm looking into turning it solar. Looking for a suitable bilge pump and solar panel. The ones I've found so far are way too powerful for my little waterfall. It has a paltry 90 GPH output. The smallest bilge pump I've found is a 360 GPH. The vegetable garden is just about done. But the flowers are blooming like crazy! How's your house coming along? ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
relyon 0 #17 September 8, 2007 Pretty interesting thread and pretty cool work. The hovering really isn't as difficult as it looks, but does take considerable experience to develop to the level shown. Similar to driving right next to another vehicle while going 80 down a curving road. Like most helicopter operations, the real challenges are in things that aren't readily apparent, such as when the conditions change or a mechanical issue crops up. The Hughes/MD 500 series is ideally suited to this kind of work, both because it has good power and performance characteristics, but also because of the fully articulated head design. I'm surprised something like a Bo-105 (twin engine, rigid head) hasn't been adapted to this sort of operation. Personally, I prefer offshore operations where there are just as many challenges, just different ones. 'skies, Bob

ltdiver 3 #20 September 8, 2007 Wow! That deck has alot of angles to it! Very very nice! My brother-in-law is just starting on stripping out their old deck and putting in a new one. Termites got theirs, but hey...it's over 30 years old! btw, just found a 1.5 GPM little bilge pump (12 volt) that I may give a try. Found it at an RV place... They suggested I get the solar panel at Pep Boys. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
