Twoply 0 #1 September 12, 2007 Anyone know about these things? I'm kinda interested in one, but I dont know much about them. I know I'd like one that's portable and not mounted in a vehicle. Thanks Mike
LouDiamond 1 #2 September 12, 2007 If your looking for something powerful and portable I'd recommend you look for a used AOR 8000 or the newer version of it, the AR8200 series. Not sure how comfortable you are with radios or what your budget is, but you can't go wrong with either of those models. If you really want to get into it, you should also looking into obtaining an opto-scout as well."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

It *can* be monitored, but if you know had the knowledge or ability to do that then you wouldn't be asking here. skiskyrock 0 #5 September 12, 2007 It all depends on what the local department is using. If you live in Mayberry, any scanner or a radio HT will work (ex bearcat 95, $ 150 or so). IF you live in an area that uses a trunked system to allow multiple agencies to use a smaller set of channels , you'll need trunk tracking scanner like the BCT-246T($250). If they use the APCO-25 digital system you'll need a scanner with digital capability (Bearcat 396T, $ 550). I'm not particularly endorsing bearcat, just happen to have the price list handy. Make sure it has a computer interface and alphanumeric tags, and for a skydiver, the ability to receive airbands is very helpful
