Cornholio 0 #1 September 11, 2007 The wife and I are headed down to to San Diego on Thursday for a little R-n-R over the weekend. Couple of questions for the locals and people that have gone that route: We're hopefully going to leave the bay area around 8, so plan to be over the grapevine around 1-2 depending on how many stops we make. Will we hit the beginning of rush hour around this time? Is it wise to stay on 5 all the way thru LA to SD or is it faster to detour to 210 or 15 and go around LA? What's your best advice given the time and day? Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! Beavis: Yeah! Yeah! lawrocket 3 #2 September 12, 2007 Unfortunately, it's a tough call on what route to take. The 210-15 is gonna take a long time - and it can get extremely crowded (i.e., damn near stopped) going through Pasadena to Monrovia. The problem then is that there's no good way around it. HOWEVER, since you are with your wife, try this: First - tune your radio to 980 am - traffice every five minutes with extended traffic on the 1's (3:11, 3:21, 3:31, etc.). Have a map available so when they tell you, "Left lane closed southbound on the 405 at Cherry, backup to the 710 freeway" you'll know what to avoid and how to get around it. Edited to add: That backup would be nothin. No reason to go around it. My suggested route is: Take the 5 south the the I-110 South. You'll hit some traffic in downtown, but stay off to the left as you go under the I-10. It'll put you right on the Carpool lane. If everything sounds cool, take the 405 south. You'll be on it around 2-3, which is good timing. If the 405 S is crowded, take the 22 east to the 5 (If you don't mind a NICE drive, exit the 405 if slow and take PCH. You can take it all the way to Dana Point where it hits the 5, and it's a nice drive, too) You should be hitting the freeways at just the right time. There's a 90 percent chance that it will be faster to drive through LA than if you take the 210 to the 15. My wife is hotter than your wife.
enflyt 0 #3 September 12, 2007 stop in LA, have a nice dinner, see a movie, do some shopping, and get back on the road after 9pm. Or find your inner kid and spend the afternoon at 6flags magic mtn! You'll probably STILL hit traffic, but it wont be as bad-lol. other than that-a few years ago i would have suggested 210-15 route, but now its so congested and backed up-all through corona and lake elsinore then murietta and temecula... yuck yuck yuck. just keep telling yourself that once you get there, you'll be able to unwind and relax. Oh.. and bring a good book on tape or some nice soothing music!! Good Luck!
skybytch 273 #4 September 12, 2007 I like the high desert route. Get to 99. At Bakersfield take a left onto 58. Follow to I15 (there's a two lane that runs parallel to I15 that cuts a few miles off the journey, I forget the highway number though). Proceed south to San Diego. You can avoid Corona/Elsinore traffic by taking 215 south through Riverside (and Perris). It rejoins I15 at Temecula. Traffic can get thick from there south to San Diego; a local could tell you the times to avoid.

popsjumper 2 #9 September 12, 2007 I'd suggest going through LA and taking the freeway. It will save you big $$$ in gas. What you do is, get on the freeway and let off the gas...they will PUSH you! My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. Falcon5232, SCS8170, SCSA353, POPS9398, DS239
monkycndo 0 #10 September 12, 2007 Cornie, I drive to SD a fair amount. I have had the best luck with 210 to 15 or 215. It is a bit longer distance, but I tend to make better times. I have hit heavy traffic through LA at any time of day. It sucks. Lawrocket is dead on about listening to the radio and the locations it tends to be slow. Have a map in case you need to hop freeways. Leaving at 8 will put you in before the hardcore rush hour. Have fun in my old stomping grounds.50 donations so far. Give it a try. guppie01 0 #12 September 12, 2007 LOL.... I was going to say take the ocean route: 101 - to PCH (in Oxnard), have a late lunch in Santa Monica / Malibu (highly recommend Paradise Cove). 10 east to 405 S (the carpool lane is your friend). If 405 S is congested thru Orange County take the toll road to 5 S. Have a blast!!!! g"Let's do something romantic this Saturday... how bout we bust out the restraints?" I used to live in Santa Monica, and I used to drive down to Laguna all the time. The 405 was very congested back then. It's always been quicker to take the 5 when heading south, but all the freeways can be that way at some point. The real key is the time of day that he makes the drive. Cornholio 0 #15 September 13, 2007 Thanks for all your helpful hints. Yeah, the plan is to get on the road by 7, and then not push it too hard driving down there. Ok, so no 405 Hey that reminds me of this funny clip long time back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fmfqdd6TLtA Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! Beavis: Yeah! Yeah! gonzalesna 1 #16 September 13, 2007 I say that you should take CA-1 if you're gonna sit in traffic anyways. AKA Pacific Coast Highway or PCH for short. Great views. Lots of street lights and takes a while, but Lots to look at. Runs along the coast pretty much the entire length of the state. Just a thought. Some people refrain from beating a dead horse. Personally, I find a myriad of entertainment value when beating it until it becomes a horse-smoothie.
