i think i wanna buy a kayak...

Recommended Posts

... but i have no idea what i am looking for...

i want one that i can sit in and has storage for my lunch or maybe even some fishing gear for later... but right now i just want one to go out onto the ocean and enjoy the tranquility... and i thought about a tandem in case i ever wanted to take someone out with me... it could be a cheap and still sentimental date... if things go right.... i saw on craigs list a couple of necky manitou sport kayaks for a combined price of 850 dollars which is cheaper than most tandems i've looked at... well if anybody knows anything about kayaks, let me know if that is a good buy or if there is anything i should know about owning a kayak before i actually buy one.

we have two single 'sit on top' Ocean Kayaks, big plastic ones that we have had for 10 years, very sturdy! http://www.oceankayak.com/

Best for ocean would be the ones with tail rudders to help glide straighter in surf...

Looking at the website, both singles and tandems go for under $600, then need to buy oars, seats, lifejacket....

We like to kayak through the mangroves, have manatees and dolphins swimming along. The silence is wonderful and doesn't scare the wildlife.

i like the sit in kayaks.... i don't know why, they're more expensive but they look classier... and is a life vest required by law in california?

Depends on what you want. Sit on top ocean kayaks are great for rougher water that washes over the top. Sit in kayaks are better for calm lakes and rivers, and glides better and faster when you paddle, compared to the ocean kayaks. We have one of each.

I dunno about california but life vests are required in Alabama.

Yea, me too.......I was looking at what REI had to offer and I like the Wilderness. And it has lots of storage space. As for handling, who knows. I have checked into a club here and was thinking about calling to see if they had any to rent before I drop 1500 on a boat. I know I want a big one for multi day trips. Looks like fun and lots of places to explore around the Gulf Coast.:)

Just be careful.

I just attended a funeral for one of my arabic instructors who was on leave in minnesota. He was 73, beat diabetes, reversed a bad heart condition, worked out every day and was really in good health.

He decided to go out on a lake, by himself, in a kayak without a lifejacket. He subsequently slipped out, went underwater, and drowned. He also didnt know how to swim.

Granted-alot of things should have been done differently. But it was still tragic. I still cant believe he overcame such illness only to die like that. At least he was happy.

John just gave you some advice that you ignore at your own peril.

I paddled ocean kayaks for several years when I lived on Vancouver Island. Did many weekend and week long trips in Clayoqout Sound, Barkley Sound, Gulf Islands. I had a kevlar/carbon fibre Necky Arluk IV that I loved.

If you want to go camping, carry lots of gear, still have a boat you can roll if you get knocked over...buy an ocean kayak from any of the major manufacturers....AFTER you have rented several boats to get a better idea of what suits you best for your body size, age, type of paddling type of trips, etc, etc.

Get in touch with a local paddling club. join. Go on trips with them.

Buy a PFD and wear it at all times when you are on the ocean.
