BSBD Logo - old school

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a good quality logo of the old school BSBD Logo - the parachutist skeleton with the goggles. I tried searching the forums, but as you can imagine, all variants of this phrase bring up hundreds of pages.

anybody got a good version of this logo? I am gonna get it tatooed on me..

I see a lot of new skydivers say they are gonna get a tattoo about skydiving. Then they get one, then something happens and they drop out of the sport. Not telling you what to do, but it would be prudent to spend some more time and rack up some jumps and then see if it's definitely a sport you'll be a part of for a long time. Tattoos are forever. Sure you can get them removed, but its expensive. ;)

That said, do what you want. :)

Once you've been around a while and seen a bunch of your friends die, "Black Death" doesn't seem so cute and cool any more.

Agreed. I can count on both hands the number of friends lost. Most of them (not all) in accidents that could have been prevented. Even if there was a t-shirt with BSBD or variant of it, I wouldn't wear it.

but isn't that part of the point of the 'black death' portion? I don't see it as cute. I see it as a reminder.

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it... It sounds like the voice of experience. Tattoos are a snapshot in time of my life. I have two girls names, a whole tribal sleeve and an Egyptian anke (the symbol of eternal life). I am not one for living my life for worrying about what it is gonna be like tomorrow. Every tattoo I get symbolized a very happy instant in time that I want to memorialize forever. If I never jump again I will still get the BSBD tattoo. ;);)

For those of you with hundreds of jumps, I am sure going in is not the terrifying fear it once was at 5 jumps like me, only one of which was in the last 18 months. It takes big balls and a few deep breaths to step into the doorway for me.

I see the the black death part as not only an ever present reminder that I am playing with fire, but a sign of respect for those of us that paid the ultimate price for participating in this arguably insane sport. It is a package deal: blue skies that I love, with the black death just waiting for me to fuck up one time. We keep playing the lottery every time we jump and hope that we lose.

Occasionally, sadly, one of us hits the jackpot. We have to remember that they went out doing something that they loved, and it was much more merciful than playing shuffleboard in florida and pissing themselves till they were 175 years old or getting cancer or something.

We respect their memory and devote ourselves to developing more safety checks and better gear like the skyhook, rsl, AAD, reserves, audibles, etc, etc and so on and so forth.

Always remembering the black death part keeps my attention split 50/50 between the deep blue sky and the hard ass dirt speeding up at me below.

Take this diatribe with a grain of salt. It is more of a philosophical discussion for upjumpers that have actually lost friends. Until I know my asshole from my elbow, I recuse myself from the discussion.

Blue Skies!
:)

Ya might want to put 'Skydiving' or the like above the tattoo...years ago a buddy got the same tat and all the non jumpers thought it was a statement about acid rain pollution. :S

And remember once you get the tat, if ya pull above 2 grand the colors will fade!

i will have to agree with everyone advising you against the tattoo, because... you said yourself you have only made one jump within the last year and a half... you are well on your way to "falling" out of the sport, and one day you are going to show off your tattoo to a real skydiver and he is going to ask you how many jumps you got and you are going to reply "5" then he will just laugh at you.... i have over a hundred jumps and i still see myself as a student, still barely understanding the sport, I think you see yourself as a badass who has had the balls to jump out of an airplane, you need to take a look around.... five jumps isn't much compared to what it was 60 years ago...

also i don't think you understand death, i may be wrong, but death is nothing to joke around about. it really does suck. and people who die skydiving were sure of the next hour, the next jump, drinking beer that evening with their friends... all of it was already planned in his mind....

if you ask me, which i think you did because you did post in a public forum, you have barely tasted the blue skies, and do not understand the black death. yes all tattoos should mean something, a moment in your life, but how are the blue skies and black death meaningful in your life?

Ah, my mistake, I figured you for someone who didn't have any tattoos... and what I said is good advice for those people. Since you have other tattoos, yeah, what's another one? :)

Could be. But for too many people, the "black death" thing is a way of looking cool and macho in front of others, usually whuffos, whom they try to impress with their death-defying feats.

We ought to be skydiving for ourselves, rather than as a means to try and impress others.

I'm not saying that this is the case with the person here who started this thread. Just throwing that out there, because we've all seen it before.

That's my grumpy old fart opinion.

I have the SF unit patch on my left shoulder. That is the only tatoo I have. Like you, I don't care what anyone else thinks or what it will look like years from now. The words "special Forces" "Airborne" are fading, so what?

If I ever had a skydiving tattoo, I like the BSBD skeleton. But I like skulls. I have them on my Harley as well. >:(

I'd agree with that if it was a 'I'm cool 'cause I play with the Reaper' kind of thing...I personally think that attitude is a bit childish; but again, it's a personal opinion.

I see BD more like an 'in remembrance of...' kind of like what the OP posted down a ways in the thread (well-written post, IMHO).

Of course I have only lost 5 friends that were jumpers (most NOT to skydiving accidents), & have only been here since '03, but for what it's worth, that's my perspective.

1. I love skydiving. I only have one jump in 18 months because I started Aff in Phoneix where you can jump at 235lbs. I moved to dallas where the weight limit was 210lbs and my new DZ says I was 25lbs overweight to continue my AFF. I got hooked on Amphetamines and started losing weight quickly. Things got out of hand and the wife said, it the "crack or me", I wasn't to my goals yet, and it sounded a lot like "it's skydiving or me". I said "see ya. don't let the dorr slam on your way out." and I basically went down a really dark hole that required an intervention and some rehab. Long story short, I made it (209lbs) and I am continuing my AFF training sans wife and son. I will finish my A license this month. So, 5 jumps, 25 to get your A, that leaves 20 jumps in the 11 days we have left in this month.. I am gonna be a busy little beaver..

2. Don't presume to tell me shit. You don't know me, and you don't have the first clue what I understand and what I don't understand. Mmmmkay?

3. I posted in a public forum because I am looking for a high quality logo of the old school BSBD skeleton. ...just like it says in my first post. I am not looking for your advice or counsel, on whether I know my ass from a hole in the ground, or what blue sky tastes like or what the meaning of death is. I am looking for graphics for a tattoo I am getting.

I sacrificed a whole hell of a lot to participate in this sport, and I would appreciate it if you all would just leave me be, get the fuck out of my AO, and post a high quality graphic of the BSBD guy. Thanks!

With that said, I also want to say as a former service member that I appreciate what you are doing over there and I know the sacrifice that you are making. I am praying for you and all of my buddies to get home safe. Remember, keep your head down, keep your ammo dry, and if it is wearing a towel, riding a camel or yelling "allah akbar", shoot it. Twice.

Cheers,

birdshit
