NWFlyer 2 #1 September 25, 2007 ... being 14 years old and escorted into school by the National Guard ... spending a year being physically and verbally abused, all because you wanted to go to school ... carrying the weight of a major social movement on your shoulders when you'd probably rather be at a football game or a dance 50 years later ... I still gotta give props for the Little Rock Nine. * Ernest Green * Elizabeth Eckford * Jefferson Thomas * Terrence Roberts * Carlotta Walls LaNier * Minnijean Brown * Gloria Ray Karlmark * Thelma Mothershed * Melba Pattillo Beals There's a lot being written about them this week, but this quote from a Wall Street Journal article really hit home: QuoteSo Americans watched by the millions and, in this watching, saw something that would change the country fundamentally. Everyday for weeks they saw white people so consumed with racial hatred that they looked bestial and subhuman. When white racism was a confident power, it could look like propriety itself, like good manners. But here, in its insecurity, it was grotesque and shocking. Worse, it was there for the entire world to see, and so it broke through the national denial. The Little Rock crisis revealed the evil at the core of segregation, and it launched the stigmatization of white Americans as racists that persists to this day. After Little Rock whites stood permanently accused. They would have to prove a negative -- that they were not racist -- in order to claim decency. And this need to forever beg one's innocence is the very essence of white guilt. Now comes a true test of tolerance - can we manage to keep this discussion out of Speakers' Corner? wmw999 2,589 #6 September 25, 2007 There was an interesting article in today's Houston Chronicle about an interview with Louis Armstrong the day before: here Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

These scars run deep on both sides and will forever be so. I always struggle to understand how a person can use the word "love" when they have such hatred in their hearts for others. Jumpervint 0 #11 September 25, 2007 I work with high school students who have immigrated to the US. It's interesting that besides English, one of the things I have to teach is racial tolerance. Some of the attitudes the students bring with them are acceptable in their country maybe, but not here. I end up extending the same acceptance to them that I do to any students, while gently nudging them to the acceptance level we expect in 21st century America. I also go to bat for them when they are the brunt of uncacceptable behavior on the part of the kids born here who think because my students don't speak English they are stupid and inferior. Overall, it's like being a traffic cop sometimes. I am so glad I get the chance to open up everyone's eyes when I need to . I'm glad I live and work in a country that gives me that chance. rickjump1 0 #12 September 25, 2007 Quoteyeah i had to watch countless videos on this in high school..... god i hate being from arkansas According to the news yesterday, Arkansas was pretty moderate compared to the rest of south in 1957, and this thing would have been a blood bath had it happened in another state. It was that idiot governor. Apparently he had a lot of phone calls from other southern governors who probably egged him on knowing they were next in line.Do your part for global warming: ban beans and hold all popcorn farts.
