happythoughts 0 #1 September 29, 2007 Ugh... I have a VCR. I want to copy all my videos to DVD. I bought a DVD writer. My VCR is central to everything. I hooked up the output on the DVD to the input on the VCR and no problem. DVDs will play. I hook up the output of the VCR to the input of the DVD and I get a squealing sound as the tv fades to grey and does weird stuff. Anybody had this experience? It seems like the only way to hook it up.

JeffD 0 #3 September 29, 2007 May sound dumb but is your DVD player a DVD burner too? And I'm surprised the DVD played through the VCR. Usually they do something to the output of the DVD player where if it goes to a VCR it wont play (to stop people from copying DVD to VHS). Edit... Ok saw you say it was DVD writer. I would make sure your not trying to put an Analog (output from the VCR) to a Digital input on the DVD burner.
1969912 0 #4 September 29, 2007 Not sure if this is the problem, but VCR's used to have some level of copy protection built in. It is/was called Macrovision. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrovision "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG

1969912 0 #6 September 29, 2007 Are the TV, DVD recorder, and VCR all hooked together? Check out the second paragraph here: http://hometheater.about.com/od/dvdrecorderfaqs/f/dvdrecgfaq2.htm If it turns out to be caused by macrovision copy protection on the tapes, there are hacks for some DVD recorders, as well as other ways to get around it. Post the mfr/model of recorder. Post the mfr/model of recorder. The copyright isn't a problem because I don't even have a tape in, when the squealing starts. Also, these are not commercial tapes. Just old personal stuff. I can play a DVD through the VCR hookup, as is. When I hook up the VCR as input to the DVD, it squeals. VCR - GE Pro-fect DVD - Phillips 3425 The VCR has been around a while. 1969912 0 #8 September 29, 2007 Interesting. Sounds like a ground loop. Make sure everything is plugged into the same outlet if possible. Then try swapping cables around. Could be a bad cable. How are you connecting the devices? The VCR probably has an RF-modulated output (like a cable tv connector) and composite video ("RCA" jacks) only. If new, the DVD probably has composite video as well as S-Video (small round connector with 4 or 5 tiny pins) and component video (RCA's again). My advice is to copy all your tapes and then trash the VCR as soon as possible. That is assuming that your TV has inputs that are compatible with the DVDR. If the TV only has RF video input(s) for either cable or an antenna you will either need the VCR or have to buy a cheap RF modulator to go between the DVDR and TV. Either way, it is best for picture quality if you feed the TV directly from the DVD using the best quality output/input combination possible between the DVD and TV. JeffD 0 #13 September 29, 2007 http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvdr3475_37/dvdr3475_37_dfu_aen.pdf page 9 Just connect the video (Front 11, rear 1) not audio and make sure its set to the right input source (front or back, they are different) It looks like (Rear 3) is what should be going to your tv. Btw, not trying to imply you dont know how to hook it up but its always good to check the basics....I know someone who owns an electric repair shop and I dont know how many times hes replaced fuses for $25 just because it takes him 30 mins to go over everything and find the fuse blown He now checks the fuses first

happythoughts 0 #16 September 30, 2007 I messed around with everything until I finally got it to work. I pulled off a couple of stills from an old Rantoul '03 video. The GKs getting muffed. A 14-way raft jump. 4 people in the raft. Sheer luck.
