Scoop 0 #7 October 2, 2007 Microsoft suck arse. I have Ubuntu Linux on all my machines.. except on this fucking laptop cos I can't set the wireless card up on it Open source it baby, the future of software development depends on whether we rely on monopolising companies like Microsoft or support free software. To make thinks worse they have sponsored a school in our area and all the students are getting laptops issued. What a great way to get a hold of the market, by getting kids used to MS products while they are young enough not to know any better then grow up with no experience of any other format. normiss 905 #9 October 2, 2007 you *nix minions are entertaining to say the least... I've been hearing the same drivel for about 25 years now....I'm still waiting...just you try and support any flavor of *nix in a business environment - and make it financially attractive to the business. Scoop 0 #10 October 2, 2007 Hehe, Dell are selling home computers and laptops with Linux preinstalled now. I just think a bit of variety can help create a fairer market. Why pay 100 odd quid for a copy of windows which you have to smother with firewalls, anti spyware, close ports and patch with updates to keep secure when you can have free open source software. I will agree it is a nightmare to set some things up but Ubuntu is childsplay, runs fast, power lasts much longer on a laptop battery and is secure right out the box AND IS FREE. EDIT: Oh and alot of CAD/CAM is now operated on Linux machines as they are more stable, similarly so are servers. But I won't preach anymore
normiss 905 #11 October 2, 2007 CAD/CAM has been ran on unix for as long as you've been alive I'm betting...at least the flavors I supported from GE/Calma, Autodesk, Intergraph, Motorola Microsystems was....and a few other flavors were built around a unix kernel as well....3 d modeling has always ran best on it... but we're talking engineering level use here...not general business use and by no means home use... most home users see the computer as an appliance...they don't want to learn a second language to simply read e-mail and surf for porno YMMV
Scoop 0 #12 October 2, 2007 but its only a second language because those fuckers at MS have monopolised the market.
normiss 905 #13 October 2, 2007 I disagree...it's a second langunage because it is THE single most non-user friendly operating system EVER! most mainframes were easier to communicate with then *nix....most....not all...but most. those damn Data General units were a bit much as well... jjiimmyyt 0 #16 October 2, 2007 Have you looked into NDIS wrapper for your network issues? Usually works. "This isn't an iron lung, people. You can actually disconnect and not die." -Dave
Scoop 0 #17 October 2, 2007 Yeah, I tried NDIS wrapper with the right driver for the chipset and still no joy. I reckon its a PCMCIA issue. Hopefully be resolved by getting a newer version. I was running Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper.
