Ordering from abroad (how to PAY, not avoid the tax...)

Recommended Posts

Hi! :)
I've got a new toy in the post (well, FedEx priority, and it's at Stansted already...) from the US of A. They're probably not going to let me off the tax (b*startds) as it has a big-ish invoice on the outside, so...

1) Am I right in thinking FedEx will contact me, or will the tax people chase me?
2) How long does all this usually take?

Cheers for any tips. I've rang FedEx twice and got two different responses. Might try third time lucky!

When I ordered something from out of country and had it shipped in... The shipper contacted me and told me what the customs fee was and asked how I wished to pay.

This shipment was bottles of wine from France to the US - so it had even more red tape than a normal order of goods and services.

So, I would just keep tracking your FedEx number - and see when it comes - and if it says "customs hold" or something like that - then you know to call...

I got packages with the tax invoice included to pay within a few days, I got packages where I had to pay on delivery and I got packages where the invoice showed up in my mailbox a week or 2 later (pity, I like to think they forgot :)). It seems to depend on the shipping company and on the day of the week :S

if i remember there was a post on here that said people like Fedex and other carriers will pay customs bill then require you to pay them, before they will release your goods to you.:|

UPS held a shipment from the US to Canada. It had a Main D-bag in the box, thats it. I dont know how they figure their tax, but they wanted $80 or so to release it to the customer. It was $4 in fabric and grommets. B|

I gave them the big FU and told them to abondon the package, they decided to chalk it up as clerical error and charged me $2.10.

When I ordered something from Jersey to the UK, it sat in clearance for a day without them contacting either myself or the seller. The seller eventually contacted DHL, and gave them my details. They told me how much VAT would be and that an invoice would be sent.

But its annoying that we had to contact them for this to happen [:/]

Well that's DHL. Since DHL and Airborn Express merged DHL has become shit.

Package just arrived! B| Can't wait to get home...

Of the two of us that ordered the same thing, which got dispatched at the same time etc etc, he got a call and had to pay tax over the phone, and i didn't get a call. I'm not lucky enough to consider the option of them having 'forgotten', it just seems odd that we got treated differently...
