ntrprnr 0 #1 October 15, 2007 Short version: I ran the Staten Island half yesterday to see how I felt. Ran a 1:56:04 - finished and within an hour, my IT band, my Achilles tendon, and my ankles all were swolen, hurting, etc. I'm out. If I'm in that much hell after a half, there's no way I could ever complete full in anything short of how I'd like to. So I'm going to defer, and try and heal. That's the mature thing to do. Maturity sucks. I'm very sad. six months down the tubes for nothing. Feh._______________ "Why'd you track away at 7,000 feet?" "Even in freefall, I have commitment issues." Congrats on the half at least. I think that in itself is pretty dang good.Skymama's #2 stalker -

Don't look at it that way dude, you're probably in the best shape of your life right now, that's gotta count for something right? Take the time off to heal, while you're doing it start swimming, it will help you retain your cardiovascular fitness and it's low impact so you won't injure yourself anymore. Maturity sucks. I'm very sad. six months down the tubes for nothing. Feh. I feel your pain bro. Last year I was in decent enough shape to re-qualify for Boston, and I came down with a stress fracture in my lower left shin one week before the Marathon. Pat yourself on the back for being wise enough to call it off this far ahead -- I ran through my stress fracture the week before the race, thinking that some cortisone shots would help (at the advice of my orthopaedist, who misdiagnosed my stress fracture as shin splints), and then had to call it off the morning of the race as I was limping to take a pee...it took that much to get it through my thick skull that running NY 2006 wasn't going to happen. Hope you get better soon...and use this as motivation to do your best in the next race. If I'm in that much hell after a half, there's no way I could ever complete full in anything short of how I'd like to. I know how it feels dude. I wore out both achilles heel tendons training too hard for months after the Columbus, OH marathon. I just didn't give myself enough recovery time. When I did my last 10K race, however, I blocked out the pain, only to have it slam me on my ass after crossing the finish line and I could barely walk through the pain. Right after that 10K, I went to the doctor for x-rays or mri, I forget, and he told me I had micro-tears all over the tendon, as if somebody took a rasp and raked it back and forth several times. It took me a year for the pain to completely go away. By the way, nice meeting you last Saturday, if only for a few minutes. He had just walked in the hangar from a jump. I met Peter a few years ago, we both had low jump numbers at the time. I didn't even have an A then. We were the last two out of a skyvan going solo and said to each other "you first?" "no you go ahead" "no you first" it was a funny moment. I was last out. The spot was terrible for me.
