dropdeded 0 #1 October 15, 2007 Got to the cables, frozen solid, no cramp-ons. That last corner where the cables were broken was far enough for me. 3 nights on the mountain, what an experience!! Gonna do it a little earlier next year dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -

jonstark 8 #6 October 15, 2007 The Sierras are awesome. I've got some first ascents in the Lone Pine area and have climbed Whitney twice in a day. October is a great month for ice gully climbing. The weather is usually very stable and the gulleys aren't choked with new snow yet. The exposed ice is often in great condition. Go light. Go fast. Go safe. jon
dropdeded 0 #7 October 15, 2007 Nope, no summit, and no dissapointmentStorms that came in a couple weeks ago left enough snow here and there to make certain times of day a little slick on some parts of the trail. We spent the first night at Trailhead camp at the Portal, hiked up to Outpost camp and spent the night. Plan was to summit the second day but we got to the cables and with slick icy boots, inexperience and an attitude of no hurries no worries, we figured we'd call that good for this trip. Went back to camp and spent a night listening to freight train sounding 80 mile per hour winds barreling down the trail route (we were sheltered at camp). Even with no summit this trip, it was a freegin awesome experience. I learned quite a bit about what really is necessary, and whats just unnecessary weight as far as gear. Tested my physical abilities and that shits good for the soul! Oh, and its "pack it in, pack it out", so I got to experience crappin in a bagIt was great fun ------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -

dropdeded 0 #9 October 15, 2007 Well, Mt. Pinos (thats PINOS) summit is 13 miles from my front door so I think I'll get some exploring in there for a start. This new house is surrounded by a gazillion miles of trails, so I can get lots of trail time in. Guy that went with us wants to jet ski to Catalina for the next adventure Im cool with the hiking thing myself. ------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -
jonstark 8 #10 October 15, 2007 You are near some awesome country if you're in Bakerspatch. Get up above Johnsondale and find the Needles. It is amazing!!! Talking easy day trip here. Go now before the road gets closed. Camping at the trailhead is good. Scramble around the rocks and make sure to go up to the ranger's hut on top. She's cool and sometimes bakes cookies on Sunday. The view is of the Western Whitney drainage which is the Kern River. Some really really remote stuff in there. Rarely hiked in some spots. Check out Moro Rock and Sequoia. Get to King's Canyon too. This time of year it is pretty quiet. Good hiking out of the east end of the valley. You're on the other side of the Sierra there and the grades are less steep but the scenery is more green and wildlife abundant. If you want another East side hike Summiting Russell/Carrillon next to Whitney is good too. Hiking out of Onion Valley is great. You start out of the car above 9000'. jon
ImGunnaJump 0 #11 October 15, 2007 Cool! Glad you had fun and used your head and were able to get back safely "...I've learned that while the "needs" in life are important (food, water, shelter), it's the "wants" in life (ice cream, chocolate, sex) that make it worth the effort." Bought a house in Pine Mountain, about 20 miles west of Frazier Park (top of the grapevine). flyangel2 2 #15 October 16, 2007 Hey you, I don't get much time to surf "fun" sites anymore with working full time and being in school, but when I do log on and see something a buddies posted, I take the time to read. Yeah for you. You're a big backcountry man now Keep up the fun and maybe us chicks will let you join us some time. May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. - Edward Abbey
