Have you ever left your ATM card in the machine?

Recommended Posts

I haven't, but Billy did once with my card.

I just called the bank and told them what happened. They confirmed the transaction and noted it as the last with that card. I had my new card by the next day's mail.:)
I'm pretty anal, but I wasn't that worried: A) Billy said no-one was behind him and I'm aware of the 20-second rule and B) I rarely use my ATM card and when I do it's almost always for a deposit (Grandma's Christmas check.:P).

I think an even better poll would be "Have you ever left CASH in the ATM?" I know of people who have done that ... eek. There's no getting that back unless there's someone right behind you *and* that person is honest.

<---- that person

I'd totally tell someone if I were right behind them, too, but think about how many times you're at the ATM and there's no one anywhere near you.

As honest as I'd like to be ... what do you do in that circumstance? No one anywhere around, and cash sitting on the ATM. I suppose if it were an environment where I knew most of the people I might leave a note saying to contact me for the cash (a friend once left cash in the ATM inside our grad school building - that's the one example I can think of where the next person in line has a decent chance of knowing the person who left the cash). But otherwise ... you leave the cash there and it isn't likely to get back to its owner.

Very true, unfortunately...

No way. If in such an environment, I would tell only the "lost and found" or similar department head (HR, front desk, whatever) and leave my name & contact # (omitting mention of the amount found). Then only the person who actually left it in the ATM could/would inquire. And at least they have a 30-day limit when if unclaimed, it goes up for grabs.B|

Fess yup - yea, one time

got the cash and ran out anxious to spend the loot, 1 hour later it was like - OH SHIT - called the bank to see if my account was drained, no problem card was eaten by the ATM

ATM cards don't worry me too much but a debit card is another thing - I would never have one

I've walked up to a machine at Publix with the card in and ready to empty an account...I kindly pressed cancel and gave the card to Publix customer service.
Then turned around and had to wait in line behind 3 lil old ladies FOREVER!! >:(

Heh. I was right behind somebody who left a twenty hanging out of the drive up ATM. I would've given it back but they drove away too fast.

That was a fun skydive. :D

The cash is treated the same as the card. If it is not removed from the slot in a reasonable time, it will be sucked back in and the transaction credited to your account. There was a scam running for a while where people were requesting the max amount and when the money was dispensed they would peel the upper and lower bill back , grab the inner bills and pull them out, wait a couple secs and the money would be sucked back in and credited. Then they would repeat the same transaction to make it appear like they did not get cash the first time.

I don't know. Cute little Latina women don't really do it for me, so I don't really pay attention to the attractiveness of my bank teller. :S:P

A good friend of mine did that years ago one day we were riding around. He comes back to my car after withdrawing cash, says oh shit I left my card at the machine, runs back but it's gone. I told him nobody had been at the ATM so we assumed the machine sucked it in. I haven't done it myself though.

due to the mechanics of the machine and the associated support costs...those machines are rapidly dying off. customers don't tolerate a machine failing and eating cards for very long.;)
the "swipe" reader is taking over...and they won't be able to eat your card!

and they also aren't capable of pulling money back in either ;)

I've had the ATM eat my card a few times in the past.

Fortunately, it's very easy to get a replacement card. Walk into any bank branch in the country (some are open till 9pm some are open Sundays), give them photographic identification and they give you a new card, verify your signature, the teller gives you a PINpad where you punch your existing PIN to verify it's really you.

New card handed to you in 2 minutes flat, as long as you can prove you're yourself. Even while you're on vacation. Not all banks are this convenient.
