How to pervent stolen gear?

Recommended Posts

A bike chain/cable lock, looping it through a solid object and your rig.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

To prevent stuff from being stolen we just need to use common sence.
Trust no one.
Keep an eye on your gear and your friends gear.
Don't leave things out unattended.
Keep a close eye on shady individuals.
Divot your source for all things Hillbilly.

Having had my gear stolen from the DZ once (and thankfully recovered), my suggestion is this.....

Take your stuff HOME WITH YOU!!! It may seem easy to just leave your gear at the DZ, but if for any reason it gets stolen or damaged, you're screwed.

The DZ's hanger was locked and secure, but the person who stole the gear just broke the lock and stole a dozen or so rigs. Locks do not prevent a thief from taking you stuff. It just slows them down a little.

Just like you should keep your eye on the gear of others when boarding and on the plane, you should keep your eye on the gear of others on the ground too. I especially considered my teammates' gear worth keeping an eye on.

locks were not invented to prevent thieves from stealing. their intent is to keep honest people honest.

I'm not a real skydiver - but I do play one on dz.com.

Ordered custom-coloured gear in really UGLY colours.

Might stop skydivers, but not other theives. We had a break-in at our DZ over the winter... Only things that seemed to be stolen were a hanging harness (an ugly old vector 1 or something sewn shut) and a training altimeter. I'm waiting for someone to show up at the DZ with them ready to jump.

In addition to other very good ideas mentioned...

Custom embrodery when getting new gear.

Also, things you can do to help get it back if it is lifted...
Keep a detailed list of all parts (your rigger can help you get serial numbers)
Keep a photo of the rig
Have your rigger tag your reserve and/or AAD with your contact information.

As a rigger I do check lost gear lists, keep a full inventory of my customer's gear and make contact with former owners when I find ID's on the inside.
