Reserve loop

Recommended Posts

Could someone with rigging experience tell me why some rigmanufactors want the cypress loop cutter at the bottom of the reservecontainer. while some(like Aerodyne) has it under one of the closingflaps to the resservecontainer(close to the top of the loop)?

I believe it was Airtec that origionally determined where the cutter should be and the manufacturers had to follow their directions. A few years ago, I was a RWS having a conversation over the placement of the cutter in a Vector I vs. a Vector II.
Airtec wanted the cutter on the 1 flap if it was a VectorI with a Vector II PC and on the #3 flap if it was a VectorI PC. A Vector II with either PC had to be on the #1 flap.

They didn't get it, neither do I, but Airtec must have had a reason.

Differing styles of rigs have different loop lengths when properly closed. Remember that all of the loop above the cutter has to be pulled though the gromments above the cutter. A shorter loop and fewer gromments, such as in a Javelin or Wings, can allow the cutter to be in the bottom of the container in a more protected place. In a rig like a vector there are more gromments and in general a longer loop. So cutting it at the bottom may hinder deployment. Also the strength of varying reserve springs may be a factor. The Vector II PC has one of the strongest springs. Not necessarily better but stronger. Strong's Quasar now has spring steel in the flaps to aid in opening, not solely relying on the PC spring. All of these factors have to be judged.

Just wondering - what exactly do you mean by "on the #1 flap"? Is that above the #1 flap (ie between #1 and #2) or below the #1 flap (ie between the top of the PC and the #1 flap)?

I just mean the spandex channel is attached to the flap. cutters are always placed on the reserve side of the flap or tray.

Normally, Cypres cutter (elastic loop) sleeves are sewn to the underside of flaps.
For example, Vector III has the cutter on the under side of the first flap, so that it rests on top of the freebag, and two grommets/flaps below the pilot chute.
In another example, Sidewinder has its cutter on the underside of the #3 flap (right side) so that it rests on top of the pilot chute.
