DZ.com HEALTH & FITNESS Challengers...I Admit to Being a Slacker!!

Recommended Posts

Trust me, I am happy with my progress, but that's just what it is. And I'm Ok with the pace as well. I do have more actual pounds to lose, not just fat but I will ALWAYS have curves. At one point, I had a set number/ goal in mind but now I'm more concerned with how I feel and how my clothes fit. Still, the scale helps me keep an eye on if my eating gets out of control etc.

As far as balance and proportion, I hear you! I spent months mainly doing cardio on the ellipitical- that did a lot for my lower body, not as much for my upper body. Working with a trainer has really helped balance things out.

Jumped back into it even harder yesterday and today. Actually, it's now 8 am here in NY, and I've already done 300 flutterkicks in 9 sets of varying reps, and 200 pushups in 4 sets of 50. The day's just beginning. B|

Yesterday as I mentioned, I did the swimming thing real hard, then came home and ran a couple miles. Legs hurting only a little bit, so despite how bad it is to run two days in a row, I will. Rescue Swimmer training is not going to take it any easier on me, so I might as well get used to the pain, make it my best friend. Slightly wet on the ground, so I may not do directional drills, instead focusing on a nasty set of stairs leading to the lower fields after I complete a couple miles. Only easy day was yesterday. ;)

Edit: Went out at about 10:30 and ran 2 miles at about a 7:45 pace, then did a total of 280 yds of sprints.

After about 2 weeks off, I got back in the gym yesterday and have been staying on my daily routine so far. After today's workout, I KNOW tomorrow's gonna suck!

Yeah, but if that pic of you on the other thread where we all posted ourselves (the one you called "whitey") is recent, you don't have much to worry about - you're tight. You even have those lines from your lower waist down toward your groin. I hardly have those, and I'm a trainer. But, I do take in a lot of calories and probably weigh about 50# more than you too, but still, keep it up...and get out into the sun some too, and even better yet, drink some carrot juice every day - that'll darken you up and naturally accentuate what I presume is possibly some ethnic heritage. Plus, the carrot juice is the best juice you can drink.

that pic was probably the most recent one I've got. I was all pissed off looking in the shot because the lighting on my camera phone sucks and it took me 20 minutes to finally get the picture without me looking like I was glowing from being so white. I think I was blinding the camera.:P I'm Spanish (you know... like from Spain) but my friends call me the whitest mexican they've ever met.:D In boot camp, I was actually asked if I was adopted. Anyways, carrot juice... gotcha.

Tell me 'bout it. B| i hate the first day after a workout from a long lay-off! :P

That's why I'm stretching...and stretching...and stretching....

Ya, today sucks... there was about a square foot of my back I couldn't reach this morning when I took a shower. (Easy now... settle down. Get your mind outta the gutter.:P) I had to devise an ingenious plan to be able to reach it. Unfortunately, I was still drunk when I woke up and showered this morning, so every attempt was futile and in vain.:D

Hooray! Hope you enjoyed your pretzel-twisting. One attempt at yoga was all it took to convince me that I'm not cut out for it...you're a better woman than I am! :D:D:D

My instructor takes the idea that she is teaching a beginner class VERY seriously. We can do things at our own pace ... she jokes that it's the "boo boo baby beginner class." I like that - we're building a good foundation.

That's great! The gal that teaches at my gym is a professional dancer, and unfortunately she just does her pilates at a level that I cannot maintain nor adjust down enough for chubby lil' mama trying to keep up with the dance squad teens. :$

I'm a-skeered of even trying her yoga! I've seen her warm up for pilates! B|B|B|

OH! Hey I emailed that clinic in Seattle that you linked and got a message back from the doc there. Sounds VERY encouraging! I'm excited to schedule for myself! :)
She even said she had some ideas and we could talk about little Derick and his weight challenges -we might be switching his med anyhoo. He gained 12% of his body weight in just 3 months after this new med. :o The boys are both getting blood work in December to see if they unfortunately inherited Thyroid Disease or Diabetes. 5 family members have one or the other, the chances are high. Man I am praying that it's negative. Those babies do not need any more to deal with. [:/]

But if they do, hey at least we'll all know what to do for them. :|

Joe kept telling me to try the elliptical thingies for my cardio instead of the treadmill, as they burn a TON more calories.

Well, I didn't for weeks and weeks because...well, they looked kinda confusing and I'd get embarrassed if somehow I turn the thing on 400mph or something and break my leg trying to figure it out! :D Joe kept saying, "Just ask someone that works there" but I dunno...they're busy, and I'm still kinda shy...

This morning I was thinking about this:

Quote

You're paying for it, remember? Every time you go, your per-visit cost goes down.

And I said 'HECK YEAH! I'm PAYING for them to at least show me how their equipment works, dang it!' So I pluck up my courage and ask someone to help me with it...and even though the guy was kind of a pain in the neck ('they're all pretty self-explanatory' :S) he did take me over to one and showed me how to set the thing and start. -Good thing, because honestly, I would NOT have been able to figure the dang thing out without way too much trial and error. It does not have 'Jaye-friendly' controls. :|

So I did this interval thingy level 2 like he said, and HOLY SHNIKEYS! It DOES burn a whole lot more calories! :) (I usually turn off the calorie counter on the treadmill because it's just insulting. :P)

Edit to add link: http://www.cybexintl.com/Products/displayproduct.aspx?id=620A this is the machine I used today.

Sheesh...you're an animal! :D

Sometimes I kinda wish I had a physical goal out there to strive towards other than 'fit in my wedding dress again'. I'm still wanting to check into martial arts for that reason. :)
Keep it up! You'll be top of your class. B|

The ellipticals are definitely "more bang for the buck", and depending on HOW you use them, you can get some strength training in on them as well. I use a Life Fitness model at my gym. And boy do I remember the first time I tried one and couldn't even go 10 minutes without feeling like I was going to keel over and die! Take it slow, you'll get there! And don't let the yoga lady intimidate you either!:P

ACME, the ellipticals in your gym are motorized? Ours run on your power, and the graphics don't start up until you do, then you input your personal settings and programs, and set the resistance, they don't "run you" so to speak. They do have a power cable, but that's really so you don't lose anything when you slow down too much or pause.

Gonzales, you did look kinda gruff, and if you'll look at my second picture over there on the Post Yourself thread, you'll see I had the same problem with getting the stupid camera phone to be correct as well, and my teeth-grit shows my aggravation, but in the third picture, I think I had somewhat mastered the are of the exposure up on the Lake Powell Mesa.:D

And the carrot juice is awesome. I am naturally as white as you are. And it lasts, if you just drink a cup every day. My faves are Bolthouse Farms and Odwalla - both from Cali, I believe, but never let it get warm and then rechill - that's how that family got poisoned last year, the dumbasses, and that's when I was going through withdrawals from the pulled products.

Plus, it's a great source for potassium lost during sweating and lifting, and it's not "poisonous" in larger amounts as with the synthetic pills (ever have extremeties cramps? you're probably deficient if not from potassium, then salt or water).

If you have ever seen these fake tanning pills, they are just beta-carotene, what is in the carrot juice, but they can cause your liver to overload trying to filter out the foreign (as with synthetic anabolic steroids), but this doesn't happen with the carrot juice. Natural is always better.

no representation is made that the quality of fitness instruction here is greater than the quality of fitness instruction from that of other fitness instructors;)

They have 2 types...and this one, YES! That's just what I felt like...when the resistance went down, it seemed like I was speeding up way too much on the stepping, and it was actually getting my heart going a bunch faster on the 'cool down' when it was gradually decreasing resistance (but increasing speed). :S

It did give me quite a workout, but I didn't like the feeling of not being able to change the stepping until it actually shut off.

A lot of that may be because it was my first time and I had no clue what I was doing!

After two straight days of running, lots of pushups, pullups, and ab work, I swam again this morning. Everything was hurting, but I worked through it as hard as I could, and beat my 500 yd gear swim time by a few tenths of a second. Then I did another 500 yds of lung conditioning laps. Followed that with another 500 of kick development. Somehow I'm still living, and I can still walk, so I guess I've still got some in reserve for tomorrow.

ME <------------ In need of kick in the tushy.

My name is Jen and I am a slackaholic. I had knee surgery in May, recovered and have done nothing but be bad. I put on over 10 pounds over the last year and am over it.

Current goal: To start my new work out routine on Monday.

Current goal: To start my new work out routine on Monday.

Hooray! Make a commitment to yourself and stick to it! B|

Me...I had way too many calories, fat, and sugar disguised as a 'Mc'-something-or-other for breakfast, and am doomed to about 3 hours of working out today to not gain a pound tomorrow morning...:S

I had my delicious protein bar WITH ME even! :S Cute lil' Sprouty girl asked mama 'pleeeeease' for a Mc-something-or-other, and being the athelete and incredibly healthful eater she is typically, I figured that she deserved a treat.

Mama, however, did not deserve a treat as well and should have munched her dang protein bar!! :D:D:P

Good luck coming back off of knee surgery. One suggestion from someone that came off of a very minor knee injury (no surgery) 2 years ago: do NOT start out with any Billy Blanks' TaeBo tapes until you are fully, 100%, undeniably, unquestionably, SOLID on that knee or you'll hurt it again if you're not very, very carful. :|

Too much twisting to his movements if you are the tiniest bit prone to knee challenges -but boy does it get your heart rate up!

Ok, normally I just lurk here, but I've decided that now I want to play (errr, get in shape) too. I started back to the gym on Wednesday after doing nothing but having 2 kids within the last 3 years. I knew I was out of shape, but had no idea I was so weak. I spent 2 hours there on Wed., 2 hours yesterday, and 2 hours today. I tried the elliptical thing on Wed., and that lasted all of about 5 minutes before I thought I'd absolutely die!! Then today I decided to work out for an hour before the Pilates class....after the first 15 minutes of Pilates, I realized I had probably made a mistake. I liked the class but a lot of yoga was incorporated too, and well...I'm lacking in the coordination/balance department. Anyway, I'm really excited about getting into shape again but don't really know how to go about it. A friend told me today to be careful not to overdo it, he said I probably didn't need to go every day. What do you guys think? Help a girl out;).

If you worked out an hour prior to pilates, then did pilates today, I'd say spend the rest of the day stretching!!! I am only kind of kidding...:|

My first day after pilates (yeah I over did it :S) I was so stiff and sore I had to pull myself up the stairs by the hand rail because my legs wouldn't work.

Every chance you get today...take 10 seconds and stretch. Sit and stretch, stand and stretch, just for the love of all things Holy...stretch!!!

:)

Small update. Swam again early this morning. Was hurting yesterday before my swim, and managed my 500 yd gear swim a few tenths of a second faster. I was hurting even more today, and I dropped total time by a full 11 seconds. Now down to 7 min 16 sec for my 500 yd gear swim. Not doing anything else today though. It seems that pain only makes me work that much harder toward my goal, but I'd rather not push my luck. Giving myself the rest of today to recover, then doing a more serious workout tomorrow.

My advice- START SLOW! Start on the treadmill and work your way up to the elliptical, because it is tough, especially at first! Add in some strength training but do it gradually. If you do too much too soon, you'll hurt yourself or just burn yourself out. You should be fine with 45 mintues to and hour 3 days a week.

And don't overdo the cardio but DO get a little help/ guidance with the weights and strength training. If you can swing it financially, hire a trainer for a few sessions or more but you'll probably get more out of the sessions AFTER you get your body used to the cardio and stuff first. Money is an issue for me, and I like to make the most of my time with my trainer. I warm up before our sessions but I take care not to wear myself out- that's HIS job!

It was a good feeling to pull my winter clothes out of storage, try on my jeans from last winter, and find that I can put them on and take them off without unbuttoning or unzipping! :DB|

Regardless of my summer weight loss setback, I'm back, and I've been able to reverse all but three pounds of the damage I did over the summer. And I'm working on losing those three to get back to my low weight from earlier this year, then more after that.

For now, for me, it's all about watching what I eat and trying to get as much exercise in as possible, considering I don't have access to a gym. Come Spring, I'm signing up for a local couch to 5k program, so that when my sister gets stationed in Hawaii, I can go visit her and we can run the beaches together! B|

Here I am checking in ... :$

Glad to come to a supportive weight losing thread. I did nothing to get off my lazy butt yesterday ... :S

But today, I am taking little one to swimming lessons and this is my first workout back at the drawing board. Dang I feel fat >:(
