Preferred altitud for Hop & Pops

Recommended Posts

HAH!

I did 3 clear and pulls on a Jonathan 170 from 3k - our 'standard' IAD height (I was loadfill doing a canopy demo on a low cieling day). That particular Jon was a 'good' one and it opened nicer than a Sabre 210 I often deploy at terminal. Snivelly, yes, strange, no.

Actually, speaking of hop n pops, as an IAD/SL baby (150 jumps ago), the SKILL of being rock solid on the slide while tossing is something you CAN'T (or don't) develop on a turbine DZ - or so it seems from many comments. I do aspire to CReW where, again, this is a necessary skill. But if the whole truth is told, when I do a Canopy Jump from 9k I almost always take a 10 second sit and belly-flip or 1/2 pike backloops or something else fun so I get the cool exit, a terminal deployment, AND a good long canopy trial.

Our activation altitude for FAI A holders and beyond is 2200 ft so 3k works quite well. In fact yesterday I pulled a 3 second clear and pull from a hanging exit on our 182 - jumping my Raven (it can bite) flatpacked by "Magistr8" under my supervision. I survived and it was fun to be so stable that I could geek the camera in the pull process :P:P:P

I did one from 2K once. I thought: "This is what a BASE jump must feel like." The canopy took a bit longer to open which made me nervous.

HA!!, I did a H&P once, from 3.5K and....WITH A LINE-OVER, nice huh? [:/] (not my packing job tho')

When I was working on my Pro Rating I was getting out at 2K under a Saber 210. Talking about a slow openingB| The reason I decided to do the exits at 2K was I didn't want to have a ton of time under canopy to miss the mark.

I have a "B" license & the lowest hop&pop I've done was from 3,500. It was extremely weird the first time around cause I knew we weren't high enough:)

And so far the most votes are going to 4000 ft. The way we learned to hop & pop was arch, look, reach, pull.
This was in the days when you could see a ripcord handle on your main, nowadays I suppose you just arch, reach, & pull with BOCor pull out. But from 4000 ft you should be able to do a tenner and you're still at 3 grand and not quite terminal. It's not gonna bite you ! Students used to do 10 sec delays with round canopies from 3500. Higher is better and it's fun to play with the canopy more, but 3500 is not too low for anything, you can do a really quick 2 way from 3500.

Prefered, 5k (or 13.5 if conditions permit as rhino noted). Lowest was 2100 and I was fine with that. Lowest would probably be high enough for my reserve to open before I hit the ground. If not an emergency than I think 1800 if I had to because of clouds.

I did the 1800 foot ones with a Triathlon150. I could make it open really quick. It was the dzo's bday at napoleon and he was trying to get as many jumps in as he was years old. I think I made 7 hop-n-pops that day from below 2.5k.

Done them as low as 1,800 and as high as 16,000.

I prefer 16,000 ;)

Did a 1500 one. It was cool!

Personally, whatever altitude the driver says I can have the door at is good enough for me.

4K
Standard @ Maytown= atl for mal.
I like at least 2 back or front flips for a "feel".
Demo or NEW canopy (or new mod.) I go full Atl.
and pull high/Solo 4.5-5K...ok at small DZ
(C-182's)

A real hop and pop is from 2500-3000 as far as I'm concerned. It's easy to spot, and looks just right.

Of course, I haven't done one with my Safire

I did my highest hopnpop a few days ago at around 8K, was lots of fun playing longer in the sky, since it was canopy class and i played with a few stalls and recovers (rear risers and toggles)...would never try that at too low a hopnpop...

Well, under the terms of the poll, I had to say 2K. But I'm with base704. ;)

I was testing out my Ace at the DZ one day. Had it freepacked in a skydiving rig and was doing some hop n pops with it. So the pilot takes off and starts his turnaround and asks "Whaddaya want? 3K? 4K?"

I said "Nah. 2K is plenty.". The looks I got from the skydivers in the plane was priceless.

Wish I coulda seen their faces when I jumped out and went into a track. :)
