ACMESkydiver 0 #53 November 14, 2007 Quote Hey, it's not as bad as lining up for Krispy Kreme opening. I haven't had a Krispie Kreme in 6 months. I wish they made a sugar-free version of their 'kreme' they put in their coffee that tastes like the creme filling in their doughnuts.... Bolas 5 #54 November 14, 2007 Quote As for the warehouse itself, if you're unfamiliar with it, you might find this walkthrough helpful: http://www.themorningnews.org/archives/how_to/the_nonexpert_ikea.php (this is a parody of game walkthroughs, and you'll find it funny once you've been at IKEA) That was funny. I guess people want to be first because it's something new and different. The same thing happened in Alaska when they opened the first Dairy Queen there. Shell666 0 #58 November 15, 2007 Quote Quote Ikea is the McDonalds of furniture. Good for a quick fix but is crap in the long run. It really depends which items you look at . Some, yes: they are inexpensive, look OK to good, but wont hold up very well. Others are made well, are a little more expensive, but still much cheaper then many stores. I have items from Ikea that didnt last a year (press wood, thin veneers). I have other items that have been moved accros continents 3 times now and are still in very good shape. It really depends... Bottom line: if you like their designs, you can find some good deal on good furniture, or you can buy semi disposable items if that's what you want for even less money. They're not just a furniture store either. I like their bed linens. The sheets are really soft and launder well. And at those prices, I can get lots of duvet covers and sheets and not have to be a slave to weekend laundry to get my bed made! Signed, the girl that just spent $164 at Ikea on, you guessed it - bed linens! Oh, and a couple of rugs and some curtain dividers to turn an unused empty area at the top of my stairs into a closet! Oh, and some nice smelling tealights! Yes, I love Ikea's stuff. And their $1 breakfast!! 'Shell
nanook 1 #59 November 15, 2007 IKEA is more of a furniture store for apartment dwellers in college or early twenties who haven't bought their first home yet. It's an expanded K-mart furniture aisle. I went to IKEA once. I nearly had a Milton Waddams episode in there (. .okay, i'm gonna burn the place down. . .) It's a one-way maze throughout the first and second floors and you can't cut through anywhere to leave quickly. Plus, their meatballs suck ass. Maybe it's just the San Diego store only. Personally, I find Walmart and Target have better looking furniture for half the price with the same material value. They also keep the sidewalks free of Cadillacs by hiring great-great grand mother to greet you at the door. (matter of fact, hasn't Florida's population slowly declined with the success of Walmart?) In short, If you like to have the ambience of a safari trimmed Airstream trailor at home, this is the place for you. _____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln
havensiangst 0 #60 November 15, 2007 QuotePeople have camped out for 2 days for the opening of IKEA in Orlando today. I don't get this, it's a store. It's going to be open for years! They're not even giving away anything free to the first people in line. I don't get it. Have any of you ever done something like this before? What's the big deal about IKEA anyway? the owner of the IKEA is a swedish(of course) mean motherfucker...he have earned bilions and he drives a really ugly old Volvo, and lives in a small house... the furnitures is crap, but i must say i admire his will to earn money..i give him cred for that.. Do you think that people are just looking to do something different, that perhaps they find "fun"? Maybe it's that one unusual thing that they could claim that they did. Plus, maybe it's fun for them to camp out with others who are obviously passionate about the same things that they are. Maybe they feel some kind of bond, and find it a fun & crazy experience. It seems odd to us, for sure. Trust me, I'm totally stumped at people camping out in front of ANY store, even if they were PAYING the people. It's just weird. However, if camping out for two days to be the first ones in their new IKEA store makes them happy, then I guess I'm happy for them. Lol.

Dumpster 0 #63 November 16, 2007 I personally despise IKEA. No customer service at all, and the rest is all cheap crap. I'll go for a good second-hand furniture store any day. Bed Bath & Beyond? Have to stay away from that place, too. My Visa has a bad habit of jumping out of my wallet and running rampant about tha place. Easy Does It

pinkfairy 0 #65 November 16, 2007 This thread is really interesting for us scandinavians who grew up with IKEA. The americans are confused about the big blue and yellow box, and don't really know what to do with it. They get frustrated and angry and dislike it at once, but they still want the stuff inside, so they can't just leave. Relax, you can die if you mess up, but it will probably not be by bullet.
