everymansaved 0 #1 May 15, 2006 Hey all, looking for an opinion from a rigger, or someone who knows more than I. I have '95 DOM Javelin J5, and know someone who's wanting to convert their pull-out rig (Vector3) to a BOC. She was complaining about the cost of a new P/C, and I had a thought. I've always liked the idea of a pull-out better than that of the BOC, so are there any major problems doing this conversion? I know people convert the other way all the time, but I searched the forum, and haven't found anything about this. Thanks peoples! ps5601 0 #2 May 15, 2006 I've jumped pull-out for about the last 1000 jumps. There are some potential complications with pull-out that do not exist for a throw away. I suggest you talk this through with an instructor before you go ahead with it (although there are some BOC deployment complications that are less likely to happen with pull out too). Going to pull-out will not save much (or any) money compared to a BOC system. The pilot chute set up is slightly different and will need to be changed which will probably cost you a similar amount to a new BOC pouch. Also the wear and tear on a pull-out pilot chute is generally more than for a BOC pilot chute, so will probably need replacing more frequently. Again, talk face to face with those in the know, they can give you proper advice, showing you examples if needed. Also note that in the UK, you require 200 jumps to jump pull-out. (Slightly over the top in my opinion, but there are reasons for this).
waltappel 1 #3 May 15, 2006 I'm not a rigger, but I have somewhere around 1500 jumps on a pull-out. I personally prefer the pullout, but I see no real major advantages to either. From a safety standpoint, I think it's best to get accustomed to one system and stick with it. Both systems work well. You can make a slight case for the pullout by comparing the malfunction modes of the two systems. A malfunctioned BOC system can mean a pilot chute in tow, a horseshoe malfunction, or a pilot chute that cannot be extracted from the pouch. The malfunction mode of a pullout is a small handle floating a foot or so above your main container. The reality, though, is that both systems work fine if properly maintained and used. riggerrob 643 #4 May 15, 2006 You two could probably trade parts between a Vector and a Javelin, but that question can only be answered - with certainty - by a rigger who has both in hand. I don't remember which year they made bridle covers standard on Javelins, but if yours already has a bridle cover, then it is a simple matter to sew on a piece of hook Velcro to secure your pull-out. Again, I would need to have both rigs in hand to give an exact answer. As for the debate about whether pull-out is better than throw-out .... back in 1975, pull-out was better. Nowadays BOC throw-out is better (90 % of new sales). Pull-outs only represent 5 % of new sales. I have over 5,000 jumps with throw-outs, but only a dozen with pull-outs. I don't even pretend to be an expert on pull-outs.
MrBrant 0 #5 May 15, 2006 A guy at my DZ had this done a while back (to a Jav). I think it was an Al MacDonald special.
everymansaved 0 #6 May 15, 2006 Yeah, maybe I'll call Al and see what he thinks. As for the bridle cover Rob, mine doesn't have one, but I believe that is a simple mod done by a rigger B as well.God made firefighters so paramedics would have heroes...and someone can put out the trailer fires. CrazyL 0 #7 May 16, 2006 Ya so either way you wish to convert, the best place to start is the manufacturer. If I read your post right ,that would be Relative Workshop. They would have all the proper parts for the conversion. Call them, they'll hook you up with the right stuff for the rig.
