If you go with a pepper spray key chain, remember to take it off before you get to the airport or the border! I've had friends do both of those things...just spaced out and forgot it.

Glad you have neighbors that will help keep an eye on your place. -Personally I think I'd rig up a trip wire at the bottom of those long stairs of yours. Any crack head is bound to miss it and cause a huge rucus that you'd hear up at the top and give you time to act.

(Ok for reals the trip wire is pretty silly. If you're anything like me you'd break your own ankle on it. )
