StreetScooby 5 #1 November 19, 2007 There is a person at work who has a cold, and apparently is doing nothing about it. For days now, this person has been sucking snot back into their nose, then harrumphing it back up and coughing (without covering their mouth). They're doing this frequently and loudly. Any ideas on how I can point this out to them in a polite, professional, yet effective manner? We are all engines of karma
NWFlyer 2 #2 November 19, 2007 "Dude, are you trying to get everyone in the office sick, too?" Or, you could just bring in a turkey baster. I hear that's what parents use to suck snot out of their kids' noses."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
StreetScooby 5 #3 November 19, 2007 I need to be professional and polite. He's a team leader in another group. Personally, I see him as an animal, but I'm not sure that's a fair conclusion for me to have.We are all engines of karma

AdamLanes 1 #8 November 19, 2007 It is possible that this person has a medical condition that you are unaware of that prevents them from blowing their nose. I know because I once had such a medical condition.

StreetScooby 5 #10 November 19, 2007 Well, I could certainly understand that. Doesn't mean I'm going to sit here and listen to it all day, though. There must be something this guy can do.We are all engines of karma
StreetScooby 5 #11 November 19, 2007 I would be very reluctant to use that line... I'm not sure how long this guy has been with the company. Plus, I've been here less than a year.We are all engines of karma
happythoughts 0 #12 November 19, 2007 Personally, I carry a small white square of cloth in my pocket. I unfold the cloth and project the snot into it. Then, I open it, examine the snot, carefully fold the cloth, and place it back in my pocket. The story of a handkerchief.
jdthomas 0 #13 November 19, 2007 just walk up and ask that he stop doing that! Explain that it bothers you and that you would like to address the issue. Perhaps voice your concerns with the big boss that this guy could be getting you all sick and that the company will have a large abstentee rate if this guy does not control his sickness. You have to just be assertive sometime, team leader or not if this is an issue then step up to the issue and take care of it.www.greenboxphotography.com

StreetScooby 5 #16 November 19, 2007 This guy isn't into meth. Far too much of a geek for that. He's a nerdy type that doesn't consider others around him. I guess the only thing left now will be to ask him. What do I do when he tells me to go fuck myself? We are all engines of karma

StreetScooby 5 #19 November 19, 2007 I really doubt he would say that in those terms. I left a pack of Halls and a pack of cough drops on his seat over lunch. Here's to hoping he got the hint. I am seriously at my wits end with this guy. I guess I'll speak with him person next, then bring it to my managers attention after that. Not sure what else to do.We are all engines of karma

PLFKING 4 #22 November 19, 2007 The local morning show did a piece on this just last week. The doctor said your body is trying to get rid of the germs by washing them out with mucus, and when you snuffle it back in, you're actually prolonging the time you'll be sick (which I didn't know). Maybe you could point that out. Don"When in doubt I whip it out, I got me a rock-and-roll band. It's a free-for-all."
StreetScooby 5 #23 November 20, 2007 Yep, that's correct. The guy is still there this morning, snooking away. At this point in time, I'm going to find out his last name, and email him this fact. Apparently, his mother didn't teach him how to deal with a cold.We are all engines of karma
JohnMitchell 16 #24 November 20, 2007 Approach him with your concerns about his health. Let him know that he sounds terrible and that you're really concerned about how he's doing. Offer some tissues, antihistamines, etc. Reiterate that he sounds horrible, just gross and that you really want to help him out. Tell him you try to stay home when it gets that bad. Tell him you wish he wasn't so busy at work. Then he could take some time off and get better quicker. Ask what his doctor said about all this. Suggest that he be seen by the doctor. After all, he sounds horribly sick!
StreetScooby 5 #25 November 20, 2007 Wonderful suggestions. Only problem, the guy is arrogant. I'm struggling with how to deal with what I expect to be an arrogant response. I'm in a professional setting, and right now, I don't want to simply walk away, but that's the best I can think of. He's done this before, and I had mentioned it in passing to a senior manager. The manager asked if I still needed help, and at the time I didn't. Right now, I'm looking at buying tissues for him (yesterday, I bought Halls and cough drops for him and left them on his chair). I'm also going to physically hand him the tissues and tell him (nicely I hope) to stop sucking snot back into his head. What's a nice way to say that? I know expectorating... I just don't know the scientific word for sucking snot back into your head.We are all engines of karma
