PLFXpert 0 #1 November 15, 2007 Protect your pets!Yes, I'm an over-protective mother. But, last night we were riding our bikes taking Cruz for his routine evening run and something in the middle of the road caught his attention and he bolted out from the sidewalk. Just then a car rounded the corner and thankfully it's pretty well-lit around our area. The car slowed just in time, but not in advance enough to keep me from almost having a heart attack. We got home and I told Billy never again. It was actually Billy's idea but tonight we used a bicycle blinker and attached it to Cruzer's running harness. He didn't mind at all.Seriously, if we're conscious enough to blinker our own bikes at night, why not blinker our pets when we run or walk them on extended leashes? Just a thought. Here's Cruz. I wasn't able to correct the light reflection in the right eye (left in the shot). I don't have photoshop and really don't give a shit. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. jtval 0 #2 November 15, 2007 I built a L.E.D. light for my dog. we hike around the mt/s behind my house. Sometimes at night. he's 7 lbs and its hard to see him if we get into some spots. I built an led light that I can clip to his collar/harness so I can see him from very far away. My photos My Videos
Phillbo 11 #3 November 15, 2007 Maybe a word of advice... Short leash. I hit a ladies dog on my mountain bike last week because she did not have him under control on the trail. She had him on an extended leash and he darted right in front of me. I gave them at least 10' of clearance. The rule on the trails around here is 4' leashes. Dog was ok, I have a nasty bruise on my shoulder from trying to avoid the dog and crashing.

Icon134 0 #5 November 15, 2007 Because Karma is black I have a Reflective Vest for her (she was a traffic cone for holloween one year... ) but I also attach a LED flasher to her if I'm walking out after dark. I also have a leash that I can clip around my waist so she is less likely to get out of my hands... For outdoor wear and other gear I really like this company... http://www.ruffwear.com/ Scott Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... Reminds me a an incident that pissed me off at the time, but is funny now: I'm on my bike about dusk, cruising down a gravel bike path built on a raised levee that follows a river. Up ahead on the right a saw a pedestrian, safely off to the righthand side of the path. Just as I passed her, my bike suddenly began decellerating and the quiet was broken by: "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!" While she was off the righthand side of the path, her damn dog was off in the bushes on the OPPOSITE side of the path, and she was holding one of those auto-rewinding dog leashes. The leash had caught the head-tube of my bike and was now feeding out all the cable. The net result was that the system of woman/cable/dog brought me and my bike to a stop like I was a carrier aircraft."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. PLFXpert 0 #8 November 15, 2007 That's funny. You know, since you're OK and all.To everyone else, you really don't want a dog as fast and quick as ours on a less than 4' leash when you're on a bicycle and he's running. He runs faster than I can bike at times. I've seen him outrun a trained greyhound or afghan at dog park. Cruz is definitely more of a track & field star than a baller. You can literally throw a ball at him and it will hit him square in the nose and he won't flinch. He's learned to catch pretty well, but...yea, he's not a baller. Track & field star!!! It's more dangerous to him if he's on a short leash when we run him while biking. When we run him while jogging, we keep him on a shorter leash.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. PLFXpert 0 #11 November 21, 2007 So now we're the most popular pooch lovers in the neighborhood! Everyone else also out walking their dog is all "Oh my gosh, he is so cute with his blinker light!" Today a woman shouted over "What a great idea! I'm going to get one for Flyer." Flyer! What a cute (and appropriate) name!Again, Cruz likes to run and needs lots of exercise so we bike or run several miles usually. There's this neighborhood that is not very well lit w/in a couple miles of us. It's a very nice neighborhood, just not well lit for some reason and I got ahead of Cruz & Billy and I turned around and (it's a cloudy night) all I could see was the blinker light! As a sidenote, anytime we ride down that street I can't help but think of that Willy Wonka song. You know--the one he sings when they're in the boat in that tunnel: There's no earthly way of knowning, which direction we are going. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
