Best Place to Buy Safe Tires For a Lil' Car?

Recommended Posts

I'm not looking for performance or flash...just something that will get us through the next, say, 40k miles before 'Little Blue' gives up on us.:P

I've taken both vehicles to Les Schwab regularly, but I was wondering if anyone knows anything better/less expensive? Oh, please keep in mind that Joe and I are NOT able to mount and balance our own tires, so internet is out unless they have a 'buy & have mounted at local shop' kind of option.

Anyone? We're looking to stay inexpensive but have that free fix a flat and a warranty...

Does Firestone have better pricing? Les Schwab won't tell you their tire prices on their website...:S

Thanky! :)

I would stick with Les Schwab. They by far have the best customer service. And they do have some cheaper tires brands, I think Federal is one of them.
I have delt with Altons a couple of times but was not happy with their service, but that was a long time ago. Just my two cents.

You can still buy online.

The preferred method is to buy from somewhere like tirerack.com and have the tires shipped directly to your local shop(Les Schwab is good)

You will then have the local shop mount and balance.

What size are your tires, or, what make/model/year is your car?

You can get some good deals on Tirerack.com, but by the time you pay for shipping and a local shop charging for valve stems, balancing and mounting, it is often cheaper to go with a local store like Les Schwab or Discount Tire. My local discount tire had better prices than Costco and larger selection.

Another vote for Discount Tire. I've bought my last two sets there. The last time I even compared prices with Costco, and it was a tie.

Look for a smaller independant tire shop. I find they have better prices and don't charge you for crap like mounting balancing and valve stems. And they are typically quicker than most big name tire shops. Also the person ruinning it will be more likely to believe in the products he is selling. I go to a shop where the guy running it wouldn't put anything on a customers car that he wouldn't put onto his car

I got my last two sets of tires from tirerack.com. Shipping cost less than local sales tax and the $100+ I saved on each set of four more than offset the free mounting and balancing I'd have gotten by buying local.

That's at the $400-$500/set price point. Things are probably different for economy car tires where shipping will be far more than sales tax.

Schwab's ok, it really varies from store to store. My most recent experiences (good) have been at the Discount Tire store in Burien.

Then there was MY Schwab experience.... :D:D:D

What kind of tires did you get?

Last time I picked up tired for my yota I got a set a Kuhmo tires and get a really good price on them from my local guy

Bridgestone Potenza S02 Pole Position (summer). Like fresh chewed bubble gum but useless on snow.

Dunlop Winter Sport M2 (winter). Good on snow and ice. On dry pavement traction probably beat the all-season Goodyears I had before.

Tires are P18565R14. Car is a 2000 Ford Ferrari (AKA, Escort ZX2 :D)

-Speaking of Lil Blue, y'all should have been there when we valet parked that baby at the Westin downtown Seattle in October for our overnight stay. That vehicle has not been washed in better than a half a year, and of course it's already a beaut...so we're waiting outside for the valet to bring it up the day after, and there are all these people with their bags after bags of high-brow shopping in downtown Seattle having their Mercedes and Lexus and Escalades & Hummers & such being brought up. A whole line of cars I'd guess probably worth $750k total...then the guy pulls up our filthy, nasty Ford Escort. The valet steps out of the car, looks at Joe and starts laughing and says, "Is this your car?" Joe looks at him and says, "Dude, we brought you a Porsche. What the hell happened?" :o:D

The guy was just dying of laughter. I was just grinning ear to ear and some family with the entire back end of their Escalade LOADED with designer name bags looks at us like we have the plague. I smiled and flashed a thumbs up.

Gotta love snobs in Seattle. B|
