JohnRich 4 #1 November 25, 2007 A common complaint about threads discussing current in-theater movies is that the discussion will give away the story line, and therefore diminish the viewing experience for those who have yet to see it. This leads to a call by moderators for a "spoiler alert" to be placed in the thread title, to warn people about this possibility. I tend to think that any discussion about a movie is naturally going to give away some things in the plot. Otherwise, it's impossible to have such a discussion. There is also the likelihood that even if the initial thread-starter message doesn't contain spoilers, that the discussion which follows will - the original poster who starts the thread doesn't have any control over that. Therefore it should be assumed that spoilers will always exist in such threads. So, if you don't want to see such spoilers, then don't open the thread. That should go without saying. There shouldn't be any excuse for complaining that someone spoiled the movie for you, if you actually chose to enter the thread and read it. So, this poll is about whether or not you think it is necessary that every current movie discussion should include a "spoiler alert" in the thread title, or whether readers should just assume as a matter of course that there will be spoilers, and then make their own choice about whether or not to read the thread. quade 4 #5 November 25, 2007 John I can talk all day about movies and never give away the ending or even major plot points. Of course, that's because I realize that some people -do- care about such things and take their feelings into consideration.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

So what did you think about that guy, when he did that thing, during you-know-when? You can only go so far without actually talking about the plot... And I've had this discussion with a number of friends I work with as well. THE issue isn't whether or not you can at some point discuss the movie in its entirety, but when. Follow this breakdown . . . Clearly, anyone that sees a preview of any movie and discusses plot points and endings before the movie is even released is a complete and total a-hole. Clearly, anyone that demands you NEVER talk about the ending of the 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz, is likewise a complete and total a-hole. In between . . . hmmm . . . a little murkier . . . I have some pretty cheap friends that don't go the movie theaters and only rent from Netflicks. Sometimes they get a little miffed if we've started talking about movies that have been in release for a long time, but not yet available on DVD. My personal rule is to wait at least until people that are really interested have had a reasonable chance of seeing the movie or until the points are widely discussed elsewhere. For example, I think it's pretty safe to talk about Dorothy clicking her heals at the end of The Wizard of Oz. Some movies, in particular ones that didn't get a lot of exposure in wide release but are otherwise GREAT movies probably shouldn't be discussed at all even if they've been available for quite awhile. For instance, I would NEVER discuss the ending to a movie such as The Prestige. It's not really a matter of "rules" but rather courtesy toward people that don't like things being spoiled for them.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
