Maybe we won't know who posted the 1,000,000th but HH might know.
I wonder, if a thread is deleted, does the count go down?

Maybe the site has a 1M post bug, a bit like the year 2000 bug. When that post is made it could be the end of the world ;)

Are we sure that the 'Posts' number is configured to accept 7 digits ? Or, when we reach the magic million, will this site crash and burn like a millenium bug with a flamethrower up his arse ?

On what do you base your 'statement'??
Is there another total posts figure somewhere?
[:/]
Are there two sets of totals running??
If so, what is the offical total and why the discrepancy?
Will sitting too close to the TV really make me go blind?

The post number 100000 from the 24th is the post id value from the database.
I guess it's a normal increment, meaning that when you ake a new post the post get an id number one higher than the previous.
When posts get deleted the increment don't fill up the "available" id.

The number of post is probably generated from a sql query to the database. Simplified like: "how many entries in table posts".
This will give the true number of posts not counting the deleted ones.

If you look at the difference between total post and the latest post ID number you might get a hint to how many posts that have been deleted.
(other database factors can also play a part here, so take this with a bucket of salt. I don't know how dz.com's database is really structured.)

just that when I asked above how will we know who the millionth poster is - cpoxon posted a link to the milionth post. We've already had it. I guess the post counter shows lower than a milion as it doesnt count the posts that have been deleted.

If reply to this post you will see the URL at the top ends with "_post_id=1005115" (in the case of this post) Thats over 5 thousand after the milionth. I guess over 5 thousand posts have been deleted and thus don't count towards the listed total.

We can still have another millionth - but we won't be able to tell who it is, and their identity will change depending on whether or not any previous posts are deleted.

I think because of the need for certainty - the award for millionth post needs to go to Roadrash. We simply will not be able to tell who was the millionth post of those not deleted and as I said - that name will change if any more dissapear.

Vote Roadrash - I like the idea of someone "winning" who wasn't even trying to.

If so much as 5 thousand posts has been deleted, then it means that 0.5% of all posts get deleted. Sounds like we're keeping the moderators busy, eh ;)

Bugger!!
OK, so roadrash should get a t-shirt for the 1 millionth post including deleted posts, but the race for the 1 millionth 'still viewable', non-deleted, or official even, post is still on.
