JENNR8R 0 #1 November 28, 2007 I've having the first of two shoulder surgeries tomorrow morning. Do you have any words of wisdom on how to function during the recovery period? For instance, how am I supposed to put deodorant on if I can't lift my arm? What do you call a beautiful, sunny day that comes after two cloudy, rainy ones? -- Monday. mnealtx 0 #4 November 28, 2007 Having been there and done that (3rd degree A/C joint separation): Spray on deodorant! You can "give a spritz" while you're doing your 'finger walks' up the wall! Seriously, though... *DO* those passive exercises!! They'll keep everything limber and prevent them from binding up, so your recovery time will be MUCH quicker and less painful. Good luck!! JENNR8R 0 #11 November 28, 2007 THAT was cool! And you're right, I'm an angel. Although, I plan on using my 'Boobie Smell' with the pretty little pills, so you may have trouble smelling the cookies. Thanks everyone for all of the good wishes. What do you call a beautiful, sunny day that comes after two cloudy, rainy ones? -- Monday.

JENNR8R 0 #15 November 28, 2007 Find a special someone to help with your dressing and personal matters, someone with a gentle touchI'm really blessed in this area. I had two skydivers fighting over the "privilege" of taking me to the hospital and spending the night to take care of me. The first one had shoulder surgery last June and knows exactly what I'll be going through. She said she could show me how to put on my bra. The second was my favorite AFF instructor. He said he only knows how to take bras off, so she wins. What do you call a beautiful, sunny day that comes after two cloudy, rainy ones? -- Monday. popsjumper 2 #16 November 28, 2007 Oh Jenn, I was soooo hoping you wouldn't have to go through all that. Deodorant? Hmmmpf... -Try washing the arm that's NOT cut. (No fix) -Try cutting that big juicy steak. (Pick up the entire thing with your fork and gnaw on it.) -Try tying your shoes. (Think velcro) Now that I've made you really happy, you can still operate that margarita blender with one hand. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. JENNR8R 0 #17 November 28, 2007 -Try tying your shoes. Quote Tying shoes! I hadn't thought of that. That's a tough one. There goes wearing comfortable shoes to work. I'm going to milk this disability thing to the hilt. I've told the people at work that I'm wearing comfortable clothes to the office every day. pop 0 #18 November 28, 2007 You need to hire a Cabana Boy to deal with any issues that may arise from lack of arm movement. NWFlyer 2 #21 November 28, 2007 Things I remember from my shoulder surgery time ... --Find a big, baggy shirt or sweater to bring with you to wear after surgery - if yours is like mine, you'll have a nerve blocker and will be totally immobilized when you leave. It'll be more comfy if you can have a shirt on that you can put your good arm through and that can just stretch over your immobilized shoulder. Same goes for a coat - something easy to slip on one arm and drape over the other shoulder. --Have easy-to-prepare food around that you can carry to the table with one hand. --Give yourself a couple days of downtime - don't plan on being back at work the next day. --Let your friends take care of you!"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. NWFlyer 2 #25 November 28, 2007 Quote --Let your friends take care of you! Quote That's the toughest piece of advice yet. Yeah, girl, you're preaching to the choir... I don't know if you'll be so fortunate, but for me, my shoulder surgery was a lot of buildup - and then not that big a deal. I was told to expect all kinds of pain and I had very little. I took percocet the first night because I was afraid the nerve blocker would wear off and I'd wake up screaming in pain... but I really had very little pain and managed it with aleve. I found myself forgetting that I was recovering and carrying bags of groceries upstairs using my bad arm. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please.
