December 7th 1941 Remember Pearl Harbor

Recommended Posts

William Nott was on a ship in Pearl Harbor that morning. He survived, both that day and the war, and came back to teach high school history and social studies for 20+ years.

Every December 7th, in every class period regardless of the class (he even did it in driver's ed class), Mr. Nott would show a film about Pearl Harbor and tell us about some of his experiences there.

He was a staunch Democrat, extremely racist and the least liked, toughest grading teacher at the school... but we all learned a lot about Pearl Harbor and some of what it was like to be in a war from him.

He died a few years ago. Never did get a chance to thank him while he was alive, so this will have to do.

Pearl Harbor / USS Arizona Memorial is perhaps the most solemn and humbling place I have ever visited.
Simultaneous with the American tours, there are Japanese tours and I wondered what they were saying. As catastrophic as we view it, it was an act of military genius. Remember, only the victors get to write the history. So, history is always one-sided.

My uncle was killed at Pearl Harbor, long before I was born. My uncle had practically raised my father, as their own father had died when my dad was very young. I don't think Dad ever really got over my uncle's death. It makes me realize, in only a very small way, how widespread the effects of these events really are. So, yes, thank you to all those who served and who gave their all that day as well as those lived through the nightmare.
