While my eyes adjusted, I thought it would end up being the Moon through haze. It looks like a comet, with noticeable tail, straight up overhead here in the Birmingham area. Your first credible post here. Beer?Seriously, it appears to me to be bigger than Hale-Bopp or Haley's. If it were expected, we would have heard about it beforehand. (edit to add) It seems to be gone now. Comet Holmes was supposed to be visible from Florida, but not so much here. It wasn't visible for long, and the last time I went out, had I not already been looking for it (w/ binoculars) I wouldn't have noticed it.
