windcatcher 0 #1 December 17, 2007 Does anyone here know of some good family-friendly community servivce projects? I would like to start getting the family involved in volunteering and I'm not sure what kinds of activites would be good for a 12 and 15 yr. old ( Plus, we have a 5 yr. old and an 8 month old, but we'd most likely leave the baby with a sitter). Any ideas? Mother to the cutest little thing in the world...
irisheyes 0 #2 December 17, 2007 My first thought was Habitat for Humanity. It is a great group, but not sure they will accept a 12 year old volunteer. You may find some ideas here though: http://www.bygpub.com/books/tg2rw/volunteer.htm Good luck!
docdialtone 0 #3 December 17, 2007 My Girlfriend is the Executive Director and I am on he Board of directors for The Heidi Search Center in San Antonio. We provide educational speaking events to schools as well as assistance to families and law enforcement in locating missing persons. We also do fingerprinting events at different functions where we provide the parents with a fingerprint card and envelope so they can keep their childrens fingerprints along with hair samples and recent pictures just in case one of them should ever go missing. All of these events require volunteers. We do one every year (my personal favorite) the Saturday before Christmas it's called "The Feast of Sharing" where they feed thousands of homeless and under priveledged familes that otherwise wouldnt get a Holiday meal. I see that you are in Arkansas but they probably have a similar organization there as well. PM me and I'll give you more specific contact info if you'd like. skymama 37 #4 December 17, 2007 What kind of stuff are they interested in? Medicine? Volunteer at a hospital. The Earth? Adopt a roadway and keep it clean of litter. Are they far from their Grandparents? They could volunteer at a Nursing Home. Sports? Find a camp where they could go to. It would be more interesting to them if it is something that interests them to begin with. My son had to do 75 community service hours in order to apply for a scholarship. He's big into soccer, so he helped out at a soccer camp over the summer. He had a great time doing that. His school had a list of places that accepted volunteers, maybe your kids' schools do. Our newspaper has a listing called "Volunteer Opportunities" once a week, maybe yours has that also. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
NWFlyer 2 #5 December 17, 2007 Look for special events - they always need volunteers and can sometimes accommodate younger kids. I was a volunteer captain for the Komen Breast Cancer 3-day walk and one of my team members brought her daughter and her daughter's friend (both 15) so they could get community service credit for school. I also regularly volunteer at the warehouse for the local food bank sorting and packaging donations for distribution to needy families. That's a place that I often see teens and preteens volunteering as well."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
