Gravity Wave

We had a gravity wave yesterday. What that means is we had a buch of honking winds! It blew some of the siding off of my garage. When the weather man said it was because of a gravity wave the first thing I thought was, "Oh no! He's gone no lift!"

In meteorological terms gravity wave is akin to what happens when water flows over a rock, only in this case it's winds flowing over a mountain that sets up the undulating pattern.

Interesting! I don't think I've ever seen that pattern happen, even with the ridge overlooking Birmingham or the mountain overlooking Huntsville... Then again, maybe it's hard to notice in real time?

If you know what to look for, it's pretty easy to spot. In SoCal they usually manifest themselves as lines of clouds with spaces between them. As the air goes up, it loses pressure and temp and creates a cloud and as it goes back down the cloud evaporates again. The cycle can continue for quite a ways past the object that causes the initial disturbance.
