councilman24 37 #6 April 24, 2006 Be aware that most skydiving helmets offer little or no significant protection and have no safety certifications. The one that works the best is the cheapest. A bicyle helmet, sold as a bicyle helmet, will protect you better. At best most skydiving helmets are bump guards, a place to hold an audible altimeter, and a place to mount a camera. This isn't to say they are better than nothing. But in some cases they might be. I'd stick to a bicyle helmet.I'm old for my age. DeadRoman 0 #7 April 24, 2006 I recently crashed wearing a a very expensive top of the line bicycle helmet(gira atmos if any of you are cyclists) and was pretty seriously injured. I dont remember the crash but a whitness said i took a turn at walkin speed and the front slid out and i smacked my head on the ground, here are some pics of the damage. Warning: Fairly Graphic. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v717/DeadRoman/DSC00351.jpg This injury happened despite he wearing the right gear and going very slow. I have a concussion and a gnarly scar for life as even the local plastic surgeon couldnt sew it up. So i need something with facial protection. As i am a road cyclist, a mountain bike helmet is too bulky and un aero, thats the reason im looking at these helmets.
AggieDave 6 #8 April 24, 2006 QuoteAs i am a road cyclist, a mountain bike helmet is too bulky and un aero, thats the reason im looking at these helmets. Whats more important? Aerodynamics or a helmet that will actually protect your noggin? For skydiving our helmets are only there to cut down windnoise, protect our heads from bumps in the airplane and to keep our ears/jaws in place when we accidently get kicked in freefall. For actual impact protect, like you would get from a bike crash, you're not getting any sort of impact absorbtion.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Broke 0 #9 April 25, 2006 If that is your concern check out a BMX helmet for facial protection. If Areodynamics are a concern then you will have to forefit the facial protection. Unless you are competitively cycling don't worry about drag just have fun. Wear a pair of shorts over your lycra I don't need to see sweaty nutsack.Divot your source for all things Hillbilly. Stumpy 284 #10 April 25, 2006 I also think you are going to get a touch warm in something like a factory diver. All those vents on bike helmets are there for a reason.....Never try to eat more than you can lift
Travman 6 #11 April 25, 2006 I don't know where you are located, but in Australia it would actually be illegal to wear one of these helmets whilst riding a bike. I haven't personally looked at the factory diver, but most skydiving helmets have a hard shell and a soft liner. Might feel comfy but any energy from a blow is still going to be transferred to the head. Bike helmets have a layer of expanded polystyrene to absorb the energy of an impact. They are built to standards, such as absorbing all the energy from a 12mph impact. Skydiving helmets have NO standards.

riggerrob 643 #13 April 25, 2006 Good point, Few skydiving helmets are designed for energy absorbtion. If you are going to wear a skydiving helmet on a bicycle, then install a (energy absorbing) liner from Oregon Aero. AO builds fancy liners for Protec and a popular full-face skydiving helmet (Factory Diver?).

Ive been in touch with the guys at skysystems and they are confident that the diver will provid more than enough protection. We are gonna have a phone conversation tommorrow about it. They are interested in working with me on making something that will fit my needs. We are gonna look into structural integrity of a shell after we add a few vents, Thanks to everyone who replied, ill post a little more about this when i get some information

Zeemax 0 #17 May 2, 2006 seriously dude, i would urge you to reconsider. Why take a product that will need adapting and is already not suitable for your needs, over one that has been specifically designed for them? Pro tecs are actually tested for the enviroment you require, and really do offer good protection over any skydiving helemet!Phoenix Fly - High performance wingsuits for skydiving and BASE Performance Designs - Simply brilliant canopies
