first concept to grasp.... is that most tape measures, rulers yardsticks etc. are marked in SIXTEENTHS.......

half of one , then half of a half , then half of a quarter, then half of an eighth... and there you go... you have 16ths....

You expect women to figure that out? :S

As a kid, I found a ruler that belonged to my Dad. It didn't have inches marked off...it had little sayings. I didn't know what it was all about back then and he cracked up when I asked....

I remember...

At one end it had:
"Just a water spout, should have been a girl"

Somewhere towards the other end it had:
"For large girls and small cattle"

At the far end it had:
"For barrom betting only"
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

I don't think the fractions part is a new problem. My mother used to tell me the story of a nurse who needed to give a patient 1/8 grain of medicine. She only had 1/4 grain tablets, so she added 1/4 and 1/4 to get 1/8 and gave him two tablets. I'm not sure if he felt a lot better or a lot worse.

You have no idea how scary that idea is. Many of my students are nurse wannabe's. There are some that if i saw them coming towards me in a hospital bed I would find a way to run, fast and far, no matter what......

I just saw a segment on the Today show about tools for women. They were showing a tape measure with the markings labeled by 4 3/8 etc. That is absolutely absurd for anyone, man or woman. Unfortunately, in my classrooms, I have discoved that way too many college students cannot read a ruler. That however is not the solution!!!!!!

When I was in high school, there was a kid who would have failed math if I hadn't helped him LOTS. Now he does surgery. I sure wouldn't want to be asleep in that operating room

Can you see my shaking in my boots? Scary thought isn't it?

My dad likes to tell me that when he and my mom were renovating the house, she would measure and tell him "It's an inch and a little one, a medium one, a little one, a bigger one, a little one, a medium one, a little one and really big one". :D:D

Only my dad could figure that one out without looking at the tape measure.

I thank god I don't measure like my mom. :D:D

I've been told to never argue with a woman. Because if you even give an inch, they'll think they are a ruler.:P

I like students who can figure things out, not quote something from a book. I can work with ones with street smarts. They know how to learn and generally do. They are the ones who seriously want and expect answers to "Where am I ever going to need this?" When I can supply those answers, they thrive in the classroom.

Well, those students will find a useful place in society, but if they are only willing to learn something if you can tell them today where they will need it 20, 30, 40 years into the future, I suspect they will not make it to the top echelon.
You may rule a classroom. But. Let me show you how to build a house (or powerplant) from the ground up. All by myself.;)

I have to tell you that my company does industrial power plants and coe generation plants all over the world. We dont biuld them, we go in after its done and commission (start up and set up) the huge boilers and cooling systems. We do all the control work on the plant. Someone sits at a computer and can see everything going on in the systems. Then we teach the people how to run the plant. NOW in the U.S. we usually teach to a bunch of men who could care less about what i am saying to them, they are usually in a hurry to get to break so they can play video games. We have to back them up for a year anyway so they just pick up the phone and call rather than figure anything out on thier own, My favorite line is "we went over that in class" Heres the interesting part,
In Eatern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Czech,Etc.. most of the people running these plants are women. Using an interpeter, i would say 80% of them get what i am telling them and have very few problems if i have done my job correct. Thier common sense is amazing and almost all of them can speak two and three languages. If you could see how most people live there, you would know that they are forced to make do with what ever they have which keeps the mind very creative. Here we are so spoiled.
Even the few women i teach here in the US call but usually to say "I tried this like you said, but i just wanted to follow up to be sure"
Oh Yes, i struggled a bit when learning the metric system , luckily in the beginning my computer conveted all the pressures and distances for me.
My daughter may take over my company some day and this summer will be her first trip with me to Belarus, and yes she can read a ruler.
So i just broke up with this woman who wasn't even my girlfriend!

I hear much of this kind of thing too often. Gee, and we wonder why there is so much out-sourcing. (Yeah, I know $$$ are involved too, but...) I try to do my part in developing some kind of work ethic. Instead of actually collecting homework, I do daily homework quizzes where during the first few minutes of class, students copy 2 problems from their homework for me. If they aren't there, tough. If they are late, too bad. It's a little idea, but I hope it helps get students headed in the right direction.
That should be a great trip with your daughter. My dad drove Greyhound bus, so business trips with him weren't very exotic-----bus depot, downtown SF----:)
