Icon134 0 #1 December 20, 2007 OK... I have a question for all you Linux/Unix folks... I set up an Ubuntu Linux Box as a File server and print server. It's working great as a File server I have Samba running on it and both my Windows XP Wireless networked and Wired/wireless Desktop (running Vista) can see the Shared folders. Unfortunately I've been having problems with the print server aspect in that it doesn't seem to be willing to print (and the Vista box hasn't been able to connect to view print jobs, The XP laptop isn't having a problem) All three computers can see the printer so the Samba server is successfully sharing it. It just isn't willing to print documents. (when printing from Vista it will print one line then the printer will freeze and no longer responds.) I'm hoping one of you computer types might be able to help me understand why it isn't spooling properly? btw: I can usually get the documents to print on all of the machines by restarting the print server through the Ubuntu desktop then printing again...Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... Bolas 5 #3 December 20, 2007 I'd try connecting the Vista machine directly to the printer and see if that works since you can print from the XP box.Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. Icon134 0 #4 December 20, 2007 QuoteHP Printer?Yes... A Deskjet 5550 Although I've considered finally getting myself a good Epson photo printer... And Bolas the Printer works just fine when attached directly to the Vista machine... Vista just doesn't share it very well... The Vista Machine will only share the printer password protected but I haven't set a password so when it asks for a username and password (on the XP Laptop) I don't know what to enter... and nothing seems to work... I have successfully printed using all of the computers when the printer is attached to the linux box it just requires me to jump through hoops on the linux box everytime.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... BIGUN 1,500 #5 December 20, 2007 OK. If it had been in the laserjet family, I would have suggested downloading the Universal Printer Driver (UPD) for Vista. Although, this _may_ help after what you explained to Bolas... http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx I should mention that I don't know squat about Ubuntu and am looking at it as a Vista/XP issue.Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. Icon134 0 #6 December 28, 2007 So it would appear that the problem stemmed from a communication Bug between the Samba and CUPS server... I was able to fix the problem by eliminating the middle man (Samba) and connecting to the CUPS server directly... I figured this out after digging a while through the Ubuntu HowTo's and Help documentations... I also got a hold of and setup a Gigabit LAN switch to connect the Vista Machine to the Linux box and now copying data from the Vista machine to the Linux box is the same as copying within the same box... SuFantasma 0 #7 December 28, 2007 Can you share some specifics about the print server? What kind of server are you using (x86, AMD64, etc)... what version of Ubuntun (7.04, 7.10, 32bit or 64bit)... are you using alpha, beta or stable code on the server? KDE, Gnome? What kind of server are you using (x86, AMD64, etc)... what version of Ubuntun (7.04, 7.10, 32bit or 64bit)... are you using alpha, beta or stable code on the server? KDE, Gnome? My server is a Asus 8AN32-SLI Deluxe motherboard with a 3800+ AMD 939 pin processor (AMD x64) dual core. With 2 GB of ram and about 1 TB of hardrives (800 GB of which are SATA Drives)... the Motherboard has dual LAN (though only one Gigabit LAN connection. The Operating system is Ubuntu 7.10 64bit And the print server is the CUPS (Common Unix Print Server) v1.3.2 The driver that Unix uses is the "HP Deskjet 5550 Foomatic/hpjis" which is the one Ubuntu recommended. Basically after digging around the Ubuntu Forums/Printing HowTo's I discovered that there appears to be a Samba Bug in the 7.10 release of Ubuntu... (and possibly other releases) that causes problems when sharing the printer via the Samba server when trying to print to the CUPS server... Then I discovered how to print by connecting to the CUPS server (http://computername:631/printers/printername) in when setting up the printers in windows and since then I haven't had any problems... I can print on all three systems (64 bit Vista, XP laptop, and Ubuntu) with no hangups or problems...Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... Icon134 0 #10 December 28, 2007 No problem man... Mostly my "knowledge" comes from trial and error, experimentation, and using search features... out of curiosity what software are you using for your video server (I assume you have a media server running on the Ubuntu 7.04 machine...) I've been wanting to transition my media server off of my Vista machine to my linux machine... ScottLivin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
