Do you want to take on the pi challenge?

Recommended Posts

hmm .. why why why, I seem to recall in psych classes lessons on how and why we break down large numbers into 3 and 4 slot sections for memory purposes, why would you ever want or need to memorize a 100 space number.

I am pretty sure we invented "writing" for numbers that long a very long time ago.

A likely story.:P I have lots of students who claim they really understand the material but can't actually get the answers right on the tests.

um... ok... I never claimed to be a bad student (in fact I've more or less always been a reasonalby good student)...

I just haven't tried to recall my memory of Pi to 100 places in almost 8 years and the nerve pathways are not used regularly thus it is more difficult to remember... but despite that I was able to recover many of the nemonics I used after only quickly glancing over the 1st 47 digits... :|

some people simply do not test well...I've known a number of engineers that are great at their job...but testing out they just can't perform well.

That's a great frustration for me as a teacher. Sometimes I know that what I'm seeing on the tests is not what the students are capable of doing. I have started giving two parts to each test (at the pre-calc level and beyond). One is the traditional in-class stuff, fairly straight forward, no applications. Then I give a take hone part that is primarily applications. It seems to be working well and I think it is appropriate for what you would do in the real world------Look things up and research to get to the solutions. I can generally tell when students have worked together and it doesn't seem to happen often. The two parts carry equal weight.

Yeah - My gutters need cleaning that day.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

That is very smart of you, keep up that technique! There are so many times when the most intelligent answer is, "I'm not quite sure, but I can look it up and can figure it out!" Keep up the good work! You sound like a great teacher!

I get such anxiety when it's test time. I know the material but i suck at tests. It's frustrating.

Why? You don't get anxiety at pull time, do you? Surely a skydive is more threatening than any test.

That's too easy... make it a challenge.....

How many digits of PI can you recitate before having to pull at PI * 1000 AGL ... You know 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993 feet above ground level ?

You could start from a 3,500 feet jump for a warm up and work yourself up to a 30,000 ft ( or maybe a PI * 10^4) ....

Hmmm the possibilities ! Oh yes, don't forget to put a PI Simbol at the appropriate position in your visual mechanical altimeter!

I, then, as now, was the oddball. I could test A's but never knew a damn thing about WTF I was doing nor why I was doing it nor what it all meant.

I could regurgitate with the best of them but that was as far as it went...that's why I never went for a design job after graduation. My rocket would have exploded before take-off.

I want to memorize 100 digits of pi before pi day! (March 14th). It's a holiday I have celebrated everyday since Mu Alpha Theta Math club in high school. I'm up to 47 so far... who wants to start memorizing it with me?!
