Darktreader 0 #26 December 31, 2007 hmm .. why why why, I seem to recall in psych classes lessons on how and why we break down large numbers into 3 and 4 slot sections for memory purposes, why would you ever want or need to memorize a 100 space number. I am pretty sure we invented "writing" for numbers that long a very long time ago."Before we waste time talking and getting to know each other, let's just have sex once and see if we're compatible"
Icon134 0 #27 December 31, 2007 Quote A likely story. I have lots of students who claim they really understand the material but can't actually get the answers right on the tests. um... ok... I never claimed to be a bad student (in fact I've more or less always been a reasonalby good student)... I just haven't tried to recall my memory of Pi to 100 places in almost 8 years and the nerve pathways are not used regularly thus it is more difficult to remember... but despite that I was able to recover many of the nemonics I used after only quickly glancing over the 1st 47 digits... That's a great frustration for me as a teacher. Sometimes I know that what I'm seeing on the tests is not what the students are capable of doing. I have started giving two parts to each test (at the pre-calc level and beyond). One is the traditional in-class stuff, fairly straight forward, no applications. Then I give a take hone part that is primarily applications. It seems to be working well and I think it is appropriate for what you would do in the real world------Look things up and research to get to the solutions. I can generally tell when students have worked together and it doesn't seem to happen often. The two parts carry equal weight."safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! SuFantasma 0 #37 January 1, 2008 That's too easy... make it a challenge..... How many digits of PI can you recitate before having to pull at PI * 1000 AGL ... You know 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993 feet above ground level ? You could start from a 3,500 feet jump for a warm up and work yourself up to a 30,000 ft ( or maybe a PI * 10^4) .... Hmmm the possibilities ! I could regurgitate with the best of them but that was as far as it went...that's why I never went for a design job after graduation. My rocket would have exploded before take-off. MikeJD 0 #39 January 1, 2008 I did get this catchphrase question right in a pub quiz the other night: SK3.14159Y So I guess I already knew a few digits. No prizes for anyone else guessing this now, by the way. There's a pretty major clue in the thread topic!
