Any reason to not have mostly black canopy?

Recommended Posts

What's wrong with black? ;)B|

Actually, I'm aware that I'm not as easy to spot as a neon pink canopy so I like to hang in the air away from traffic and land after/away from the others (relatively easy as it glides well).

With the coloured line attachement points and the center cell marking, an all black aerodyne pilot is not harder to pack than any other.

my nitro 135 is black with orange checker-boxes for the middle cells ans stabilizers - i like it and it is clarly visible from ground and sky

as for packing volume: white fabric of the same weight packs a tidbit smaller than black (or any other color) fabric
as for longevity: white canopyfabric definitely lasts longer than neon-colores ones
The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

I've never actually flown near a black canopy, and something made me think that it would stick out in the sky - now I see that I was wrong.

I think I'll pick some combination of Jade/Magenta/Blackberry that will stick out.

Thanks again for all the replies!

Super stealthy for night jumps - sneak up on your friends, they'll never see you coming!

And they will never see him coming - increasing the possibility of collisions. Not a good idea for a night jump, IMO.

Other than that, I don't see any problem with it.

I don't know, in my experience the color of the other canopies never made any difference... they were either black moving voids in the sky (from below) or black moving voids on the ground (from above), and the bigger the void the closer they were...

(5 night jumps, no CRW or canopy illumination)

The amount of moonlight can make a significant difference. And a strobe or chem-light can reflect light off the canopy - but I don't know about a black one. But night jumps are so rare, I wouldn't consider that a reason not to buy a black canopy.

(25 night jumps, moon, no moon, illumination, no illumination) :)

The military guys here jump light grey canopies for daytime stealth and dark grey canopies at night. I think black shows up better than grey at night.

The one canopy I really hadn't seen coming was various colors of blue in a row. We have some all or almost all white canopies here, those are harder to spot than the one black canopy we have, IMO. Guess it depends if you have to look up or down...

My "new" canopy is magenta alternated with yellow, so no-one can say they didn't see me coming from ANY direction :S:D
