jtval 0 #1 January 6, 2008 So maybe I got it wrong but does the following strike you as idiotic? My GF got a GPS for Christmas. today it was stolen from her car. (not without a broken window, first) FYI- a GPS is a device that tracks a location of the object anywhere on the face of the earth(as long as the maps are uploaded) Wouldn't we be able to track them when we give the info to the GPS company and the cops? Unfortunately, she didnt register it yet. She's going to try to regi it tomorrow (she still has all the info) Question, Our address' were in the GPS that is not a great feeling. Is there anyway to clear a GPS (Garmin NUVI 200) through there website/customer service? My photos My Videos

Is there anyway to clear a GPS (Garmin NUVI 200) through there website/customer service? Doubt it. most GPS's dont have any kind of two way communications. All they do is recieve the signal and figure out where you are. They really dont have any way or reporting the location to anyone remotely. Sorry, that sucks. 1969912 0 #3 January 6, 2008 Unfortunately, the GPS is just a receiver. It doesn't transmit anything. I doubt the Mfr. could remotely delete any addresses that are programmed into the thing (they definitely couldn't do it throught the GPS system). The addresses aren't a huge deal anyway, because it's pretty easy to get a name/address just using a license plate number. You might be able to report the thing as stolen to the Mfr., who may be able to prevent the thief from downloading new maps, etc. though. jtval 0 #4 January 6, 2008 Thanks! I guess that all should have been obvious but the unit was just stolen about 2 hours ago. What a shitty evening this turned out to be.My photos My Videos
RALFFERS 0 #5 January 6, 2008 Hey JT, Sorry to hear that bro - I know how you guys feel because I had a very similar experience; my car was broken into not too long ago also. Although the GPS itself wasn't in there, the windshield mounting bracket was (this probably led whoever broke in to believe that it was there.) Unfortunately, I did have my stereo face in the car, so as a result I had that stolen, the mounting bracket, and they even took the car charger for the GPS. Moral of the story is don't leave so much as the slightest sign of anything valuable in your car. Note: all this took place inn front of my house, within a 2 hour period of when i left my car; I don't live in a bad neighborhood either... The only way I leave anything in the car is if A) I park in my garage (even then I put the alarm on btw - I know, I must be paranoid) , or B) I park in the gym parking lot, directly in front of all the windows to the building; the parking lot has loads of cameras and is also well lit as well. As for the addresses - I wouldn't worry about that; it's nothing that can't be gained easily via a multitude of ways utilizing public information. Glad nobody got hurt...Dialogue/commentary between Divot, Twardo & myself - "from your first Oshkosh when the three of us were riding to or from one of
1969912 0 #6 January 6, 2008 How much damage did they do to your car to get the stereo face, GPS bracket and charger (total value, maybe $20)? That's what pisses me off the most about scumbags like that. I wonder what kind of liability would be associated with epoxy'ing razor blades to a GPS mount (for decorative purposes, of course) if a thief were to accidentally cut himself? g2gjump 0 #7 January 6, 2008 You're correct because it is actually called a GPSr (Global Positing System Receiver) hence them name it receives the signal. GPS is the acronym for the whole system satellites, etc. etc.
Beerlight 0 #8 January 6, 2008 That sucks JT... Forking thieves! Sorry, but have to ask, what did you think of the Garmin 200? I was thinking of one....
DougH 270 #9 January 6, 2008 It sucks but don't leave those things in your car, even if you are parking it at your house. I have heard of theives smashing windows now if there are suction cup marks on the windshield. They assume that you just took the unit down and put it in the glove box. Scumbags. jtval 0 #10 January 6, 2008 She got it for christmas. I liked it so much that I am planning on buying one. What sucks is that we were goingot sushi (that part was good) I parked my car at one place and we drove to another .4 miles away. it was the first time that I was in her ar since she had mounted it. I told her she should remove it but she didnt feel it was a "bad area." Moral of the story there is NO SUCH THING AS A GOOD AREA. Our friend was parked right next to us. He had a satelitte radio in the same spot she had her GPS. she had very dark tinted windows, he did not. They must've used a centerpunch to get in because there was a hole big enough to reach an arm through and that was it. NOW THE GOOD NEWS It could have been far worse. Her laptop, gear bag with all her gear, She had her purse, a friends purse (who had parked in the same spot I did and driven over) and other misc stuff in her car. They could have taken 5 minutes and carrued a bunch of that stuff out. I think its just a kid(s) who saw the GPS and wanted it. but Nowadays they could use the info in the GPS to get everything else.My photos My Videos
LouDiamond 1 #11 January 6, 2008 Some GPS units have a PIN code that has to be entered to allow the unit to work or physically be located at the stored "home" location. Of course the PIN code is an option the user has to activate in order for it to work. If your GF activated this feature, they will not be able to use the GPS unit."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
jtval 0 #12 January 6, 2008 That was another thing I told her about that she didnt get around to, yet. She was gong to register it all yesterday prior to going out but she didnt have all the info with her.Murphy is a dickhead. My photos My Videos
CSpenceFLY 1 #13 January 6, 2008 That sux. After Christmas shopping at it's worst. People, don't leave stuff visable in your car. Especially this time of year. Crooks are not stupid, they know people get cool stuff for Christmas.
jtval 0 #14 January 6, 2008 True. they were smart enough to grab the item they wanted for christmas from someone who jsut got it herself. Like I said though, it could have been worse. She had alot of stuff in her car.My photos My Videos
CSpenceFLY 1 #15 January 6, 2008 I hope she has removed all of that stuff since this happened.

dannydan 5 #17 January 6, 2008 Quote Wouldn't we be able to track them when we give the info to the GPS company and the cops? Well...... If you ever do figure out a way (if possible) to track the THUGS, find them THUGS and the GPSr then send them thar THUGS to Kallend and POP... While they might not kill'em with a gun, or chop their hands off these peeps should deffinatly fear the smacking across their faces with the white glove treatment (monty python)... lol
jtval 0 #18 January 6, 2008 Well, I figured since our cell phones can be tracked why can't the actual GPS unit? I mean if someone drives off the road it would be easier to find them by tracking the car. I guess since most people have cell phones before they have GPS units its redundant. My photos My Videos
CSpenceFLY 1 #19 January 6, 2008 There are units that can be tracked but they are expensive.
LouDiamond 1 #20 January 6, 2008 Check the box the unit came in. Sometimes there is serial number info on the box or paperwork. Chances are who ever stole it will try and pawn it. If you know what the serial number is it will be easier for you to recover it if you find it in a pawn shop at a later date. Did you also file a police report?"It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
jtval 0 #21 January 6, 2008 QuoteDid you also file a police report? HAHAHH! Good one. Don't you know that you can not report a crime until monday morning?
