SarahC07 0 #1 January 7, 2008 This evening, I went to the Houston Symphony Pops performance of Andrew Lloyd Weber's most famous arrangements. It was spectacular!! The symphony was accompanied by three unbelievably talented vocalists. They finished the performance with "The Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera (yeah I probably did that wrong, whatever). I'd go see it all over again, if I could... I'm a huge huge huge fan of orchestral performances. I'm also a big fan of Cirque de soleil - all of the shows I have seen were AMAZING. Yellowcard, Dave Mathews Band, Third Eye Blind - also great live... These days nothing (and I mean nothing) makes me quite as excited/happy as a live performance... sad? Probably so... Anyone else feel the same? Any recommendations?
AggieDave 6 #2 January 7, 2008 I really want to go to a Houston orchestra or something at the Meyerson in Dallas that features their large pipe organs and featuring Bach's fugues. The last live performance of a national/internationally known group was Maynard Ferguson in 2003. That was one hell of a performance and I was glad to have gotten to see him perform live before he died.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." One of the big churches in downtown Houston used to have a free organ concert on the first Tuesday of every month, but I do not know if that is still happening. All these big churches have really nice organs and all they play is Sunday service....what a waste! AggieDave 6 #5 January 7, 2008 The closest I've been to hearing it right is having Bach turned up moderately loud on a well tuned and powerful audio system. It still doesn't convey the raw power of full sound of a real pipe organ.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." SarahC07 0 #6 January 8, 2008 Ya know, I'm not a huge fan of the pipe organs, Dave. In fact, they might be one of my least favorite instruments... hmmm. I would pay lots of money to see Garth Brooks live - I never did get to...
kschilk 0 #7 January 8, 2008 I can't believe I'm admittin' this but a few years ago, I discovered that I actually kinda' enjoyed.....well....the freakin' ballet! I saw "Swan Lake", performed by the Marinski Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia and was actually awed by the performance! We went to another "city ballet" production of "Gizelle"...not quite like the Marinski but still good. Before that....it was 25 years of Kiss, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, Yes, ELP, etc.......it's amazin' how much influence, a woman can have."T'was ever thus." kschilk 0 #15 January 8, 2008 Well, that was next on her list but luckily, a friend of her's (who just happened to be a KGB/Customs agent) owned an American made car and needed it repaired. He asked me to do it (knowing I was a mech) and though it interfered with her opera plans, well...."Dear, he is KGB." .......and I used to think they were the "bad guys"! "T'was ever thus."
