SkydiveStMarys 0 #1 January 7, 2008 run/jog or after you go for a run/jog? Not trying to lose any weight with the whole "running thing". But last night started back with running and ate before I went. About two hours later (around 9 p.m.) was famished. I know its not good to eat that late at night. So what do y'all think? Before? or after? BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. A miracle is defined by gratitude.
Squeak 17 #2 January 7, 2008 SMALL snack before but eat afterYou are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing?
tigra 0 #3 January 7, 2008 Well, I usually go to the gym straight from work and don't get home until 9:00ish most nights. I try to eat something small beforehand like a bowl of cereal and I eat dinner when I get home even though its late. If I don't eat something before the workout its a) less productive and b) I'm that much more famished and likely to eat junk when I am finished. So, I vote both. Remster 30 #4 January 7, 2008 Well, if I eat too much before a hard ride, I get chunky burps... So try a light snack (cliff bar or something like that) an hour before. Remster
McBeth 0 #5 January 7, 2008 I do both... just a snack before hand and then a small meal after.

tigra 0 #7 January 7, 2008 I was thinking the same thing! He's right though- don't eat anything heavy right before running or working out.
ACMESkydiver 0 #8 January 7, 2008 Quote I was thinking the same thing! He's right though- don't eat anything heavy right before running or working out. I have the same issue if I eat too much prior...produces a lot of acid reflux that burns the throat uncomfortably whilest working out (especially if I'm doing abs). And ick! Chunky burps...hahahahaa...yeah I guess I have to admit that too. I agree with most responses here -small snack then eat later. -I'm not a fitness expert though. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. kelpdiver 2 #9 January 7, 2008 I'm not sure that adage against eating late is valid. But I'm quite sure it's a bad idea to eat substantially before the run, and afterwards good to get some carbs immediately, and some protein within 90 minutes.

It's said the meal post-workout is especially important. Something about muscle breakdown and restoration of said muscles. I'm NOT an excercise physiologist! But, I know peoples..... Hausse 0 #14 January 8, 2008 My suggestion: 2 hours before running: The good old chicken and rice (depending if you want to gain muscles more of both so you get a calories surplus) directly before the run: water and a banana directly after the run: some fast carbs (maltodextrin or just a bunch of juice) 2 hours after running: More chicken and rice or some other good combination of protein and long carbs. kelpdiver 2 #15 January 8, 2008 Quote"afterwards good to get some carbs immediately, and some protein within 90 minutes." Why? The carbs restore blood sugar after the workout - this is probably the most guilt free time to eat pure sugar (though my belief is that esp on a good workout routine, you can eat anything you like). The protein bit is for the muscle repair and build up. Of course, don't forget water. If the workouts are very hard ones (hour of sweating) you might even weigh yourself before and after and drink the equilvent amount of water. Since I don't like water, juice or gatarade combines the water and carbs.
