Blown Motor...diagnosis*updated on what im doing on new motor*

Recommended Posts

brief background. 1998 mitsubishi eclipse spyder 2.4L 5 speed. 3 months ago the previous owner's gf was driving during a torrential downpour...drove down a dip where the water was about 2 feet high. the car died..she tried starting it 3 times(mind you it has a true cold air intake sitting about 8 inches off the ground). Sucked about a half gallon of water into the motor. We took the valve cover off ad cycled it and got what i thought was most of the water out...but surprisingly the motor ran!

I agreed to take over the payments on the car because he went at bought a 06 acura rsx type s...which is a sweet car btw! I did it because i have wanted a 5 speed eclipse spyder for about 5 years now and never came across a spyder that was manual. They were always 5 speed hard top or automatic convertible.

I knew it was going to happen in time but last weekend i was driving it and pulling out from a stop in 1st gear...going into 2nd gear..the clutch wasnt even out yet and i hear a loud POP and the motor immediately shuts down. Im pretty good with car but i have never torn apart a motor single handedly. I removed everything with the exception of the intake system, block, and tranny.

8 bent valves in the head, #1 piston, rod and bearing are in literally ~20 pieces...not counting the fragmented pieces. Rod is broke in half. There is about a millimeter deep gash in the cylinder wall. 1 inch up from the bottom of the block there is a 1 inch diameter hole...big enough to look through and see the crank. The block would have been salvageable if it wasnt for the hole in the block.

On a positive not im in the process of looking for other motors. I plan on buying one right away to make the car mobile...and im buying a second to tear apart abd build. I plan on boring from a 2.4 to a 2.6L, haivng golden eagle sleeves installed, and having the head ported and polished. All that will be done at a machine shop. I will be installing forged rods and pistons. Havent decided on what rings im going to go with. Im also upgrading the cams and gears along with the springs and retainers. Im basically building the motor to get it ready to be turbo charged.

I will have pictures of the damage later on today as i still have to clean the oil pan out. I will update this thread when i post the pics.

haha..its safe to say i wont be jumping for awhile. It sucks having 2 expensive hobbies!

I called the local mitsubishi dealership and they said a brand new block is $4,851 and the cylinder head is $1300.
Im pricing around and salvage yards and the only quote i have gotten for far is $1000 for the complete motor shipped to my front door.

Haha I have a Honda S2000, completely gave up on the car hobby when I started jumping. Im even looking to sell my S2000 to get something more practical and cheaper on maint.

If you are going to keep the Cold air intake, make sure you get a bypass valve to avoid these things in the future.

By the way I have had 2 eclipses a 92 AWD and a 96 GS. Both great cars. Never let me down. Hope you enjoy it when you get it fixed!

I used to be a professional wrench and part of the shop's clientel were racers. That part of the office had a large sign that said-

"Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?"

Another with formula for said speed-

"Hp = cubic$$ x time(days x days) - Ci(customer intervention factor)"

ok i spent the last 4 hours or so researching. Im still going to get a normal motor to make the car mobile.

What im doing different..and mitsubishi familiar ppl will understand what im about to type.

Im getting another 4G64 block and doing the hybrid 4G64/4G63T motor. i found a plethora of write ups from people that have done it. the 64 block can handle more power than the 63 block...and vice versa..the 63 head can handle more power than the 64 head....so thus im building the hybrid. It will be some time before i can find a damn 64 block alone..but when i do ill start the process!

i would just put a junk yard engine in the car..then get another to build...also is the comp ratio ok for a turbo charged engine...there are many variables to building a turbo charged engine. way over my head...so i would try to find a build online or a magazine that they had good luck and proven performance out of....imho...tony

we must have been typing at the same time....

we probably were..but i found some site that tells me exactly what i need to know.

this site for the build
http://www.extremeevolutions.com/4G64_buildup.htm

and these sites for all the necessary parts

1G and 2G heads
http://www.4g64.com/users/raycer97/

and then there is the DSM talk forum..where alot of guys are happy to answer questions
http://www.dsmtalk.com/

So..as you can see i have a ton of resources to use to accomplish the task!

From the dealer? Dude, time to go junk yarding. Find a good donor car that was totaled from the rear. Hell, you might even find a good 350 small block and a Ford 9" while you're there to "upgrade" your car.:P

Ok, seriously, you can build out a quality engine from what you've got that is still quality (top end) and a new bottom end from a donor engine. If you shop smart you'll find something that might just need a simple rebuild for literally 1/3rd of the price of stuff from the dealer.

Im not sure if you read my post about the hybrid but thats what i plan on doing. Its going to take some time because i need specific parts which i have found lately by calling various junkyards are hard to find. Im going to get a complete motor to make the car mobile then after that im going to do the 4G hybrid. It will be built up for a turbo application so it will scream too B|

At least you went into the car purchase knowing a hydraulicked engine that still ran wouldn't last very long (& it didn't).

I understand hybrid engines, & am always learning more. My brother is in the planning stages of our next project; a hybrid 4.2/4.0 AMC engine going into an 84 AMC Eagle wagon. He has a 4.0 head, modified to fit the 4.2 block, coming (ordered it yesterday). Plan right now is to stroke it with a 4.0 crank, too.

I could go on about our other cars (64 Imperial 'vert, 68 Barracuda, 68 Dart, 69 Dart, 69 Coronet 500 wagon) but won't here. Feel free to PM me! Been a "car guy" since the age of 2, was doing the car thing before skydiving, & still doing it (nearly 15 years since my last jump).
