For the past year, the Groom Lake airport (yeah, that on) has been appearing on GPS units and flight planning software. The identifier is KXTA. Who says the FAA doesn't have a sense of humor? And it's listed as "Private, VFR, No Fees". I guess that's true unless to want to call the prison time for busting the restricted airspace a fee

I have been seeing Groom Lake on Google Earth, almost down to being able to identify the planes sitting on the tarmac. But that's interesting that they're letting it show up on GPS and the like. Wouldn't we get a military escort out of the area if it it looked like we would enter the restricted area? Does the info on the GPS unit warn of the restrictions?

It's listed as "Homey Airport." And yes, it's in the middle of a huge restricted area. And yeah, you should be able to see that on an aviation GPS.
