deathtrap 0 #1 April 10, 2006 How many jumps do you think major canopy manufacturers(PD, Icarus, Precision, etc) put on a new design before release to the skydiving public?

Varies greatly between the different manufactures......Some do more, some less!!!
L.O. 0 #3 April 11, 2006 I am sure that each manufancturer is different. I am also sure that with a new design they have at least a half a dozen test jumpers doing a couple hundred a piece. So several thousand jumps before it hits the market is a sure thing. The liability in todays market is far to savage to allow a canopy to go to market without a lot of testing.HPDBs, I hate those guys. AFB, charter member. darkwing 5 #4 April 11, 2006 I'm sure it varies greatly from canopy to canopy, even for the same manufacturer. Depending how tricky you are getting with the design, and what your hopes and expectations are, it can take a little, or a long time to dial it in. Maybe even never. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
riggerrob 643 #5 April 11, 2006 The amount of testing depends upon the manufacturer. The better manufacturers prefer to make a few thousand jumps on a new design before selling it to the skydiving public. That is why they sponsor leading competitive teams and instructors, because they make more jumps - in shorter periods of time - than anyone else. A full-time instructor - at a busy DZ - makes more than a thousand jumps per year. Similarly, top competitors do up to 1500 jumps per year. Think about how quickly a team can accumulate jumps by doing 10 or 15 per day. For example, Aerodyne is currently sponsoring the Norwegian National 4-way in order to learn long-term wear patterns on their Icon containers and Mamba mains. deathtrap 0 #6 April 11, 2006 So what about the bigger sizes, do you know of any teams out there jumping the Crossfire2 189 or a Stiletto 190. How many jumps do you suppose they put on the canopies that no team will jump?
phoenixlpr 0 #7 April 11, 2006 Does it really matter? They suppose to test it as long thats ready....
deathtrap 0 #8 April 11, 2006 just wondering, I just hear that some canopies are "tested" more then others, I was just wondering what "tested" was....

Like love "tested" is in the eye of the beholder. It's a great advertizing slogan just like "it's patented". See a previous discussion on patents and their use. The only measurable testing standard in this indusrty is TSO (currently, ASE 8015 B). That's it, everything else is subjective. Mick.
