Can't Sleep, Clowns Will Eat Me (Study!)

Recommended Posts

**caution: rant below**

What utter BS.

Of course kids are leery of strangers, they always have been, and always will be.
If they are really frightened of the clowns they see in the circus (for instance), then I blame the parents for not paying enough attention to what movies their kids are watching.

Furthermore, I am always leery of any news article containing the phrase "a survey suggests".

What survey? Who performed it? Where did they perform it? How many participants were there? Was the questionnaire completely objective? Are there other surveys indicating the same thing? And, not unimportantly in this case, what was the exact purpose of the survey?

I was one of the kids, and still today as an adult, don't really care for clowns. Stephen Kings, IT and the clown in the first Poltergeist did it for me....

I don't get it, the clown from IT was not a very nice looking clown. Why would that make a goofy looking clown scary??

Coulrophobia is very real.

What isn't scary about a grown man in makeup and a funny wig trying to entertain kids? I can't figure out what is more distrubing: clowns, carnies ro ice cream men.

The ice cream man is cool. He stops by Bay Area Skydiving a lot. I can get ice cream between loads.

"It is the fear of the mask, the fact that it doesn't change and is relentlessly comical," says Campbell

If you put on sunglasses, so that your eyes cannot be seen, and do not change your expression, dogs will growl because of the uncertainty. They do not know how to evaluate your appearance.

"People are typically frightened by things which are wrong in some way, wrong in a disturbingly unfamiliar way," Prof Salkovskis says.

"It is almost certainly not a reaction to clowns, but we are sensitive to things which are extraordinary, particularly sensitive when we are young. My three-year-old was terrified by Peter Rabbit at a B&Q. Peter Rabbit is six inches high, not seven feet high."

My nephew was terrified when, at the age of 6, he saw the two 6' 6" Chip and Dale (squirrel cartoon) characters walking towards him at Disney.

And obviously it doesn't take a great leap of the imagination to suppose that children in hospitals, away from home, in an unfamiliar environment and worried about their health or elements of the treatment, may be more nervous than usual.

"Being away from home or away from a carer makes children more susceptible to fears," Prof Salkovskis says.

Just being in a hospital and away from parents is unsettling enough without somebody dressed really weird, who then invades your personal space.

All the reasons in the article seem fairly valid.

At a circus, with parents and from a distance, the effect is quite different. My sister was thrilled to do a promotional photo with Weary Willie at Ringling Bros Circus back in the day.

My sons are scared of dogs. Doesn't mean they watched 'Kujo'.

I didn't like clowns or those huge characters at Chuck E. Cheese's either as a 5 year old kid, and that was LONG before 'IT' or Poltergeist were ever in my viewing repertoire. There's something unsettling about not seeing the person behind an elaborate disguise.

Come to think of it...NONE of my kids ever liked those big freaky mascots. :S

Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.

When I was very young I asked my mom if she would leave the light on in my bedroom because I was afraid of the dark. She said that if she did that the devil clown under my bed would kill her.:o
This came from the cartoon Red Meat. My mom wasn't that mean.

I may be getting old but I got to see all the cool bands.

Clowns are schizophrenic, dogs are cool and ice cream men, remind me of my Navy "working whites". :|
