happythoughts 0 #8 January 17, 2008 The booze was "left by a passenger". Sometimes, it's true. My friend is a prosecuting attorney who says that it is easy to get snagged in a scenario like that. Two friends go to restaurant. Two others ride along. Someone decides to place their bag of goodies under the seat instead of carrying them into a restaurant. In a distracted frame of mind, they forget to retrieve it. They forget where they left it and it remains there for 6 months until a traffic stop. "Do you mind if I search the car?" "Go ahead." "What is this?" "Not mine..." My friend says that he told his kids to never consent to a search.

jtval 0 #12 January 17, 2008 Quote The booze was "left by a passenger". Sometimes, it's true. . The point being that NO ALCOHOL should be in the car of a 19 year old. (...and I am not being a hypocrit here.) She caught her underaged son with alcohol. Whether it was his or not isn't the point. I think she made a good call. If he was smart enough not to get caught than he might be mature enough to have a drink, too. My photos My Videos

If it belonged to his friends, it still has no business being there in the car. If he is not responsible enough to keep alcohol out of the car, then he loses the car. My point is, if it belonged to a passenger, I wouldn't want him to be in jail 3 months later because of it.
happythoughts 0 #16 January 17, 2008 Quote That would never happen in my car. I'm anal (but at least I'm funny about it. ) It's the way to be. The only way that my car will be cleaned is if the food wrappers spontaneously combust. There are a lot of teenagers out there with irresponsible friends. I wouldn't want them to suffer due to the carelessness of others. You are now a role model. Together we will promote the alternative idea of routine car cleaning also. Sorry If I misunderstood your post I THINK you were just bringing foward an example from your lawyer friend. The kid is not going to jail. His mom just took away his car in a humorous fashion. I was just mentioning it as a caution for the sake of the parents of teenagers. You don't always know all the associates of your kids or their friends. "He's a friend of a friend, I don't know him that well." I wouldn't have thought of it myself, except that my friend gave that advice to his kids. He is the most law-abiding person that I know. Unstable 9 #21 January 17, 2008 I saw that article on Yahoo News a week or two ago - I about fell out of my chair laughing. I'd give her a high five. Too many parents I know just seem to accept that teenaged drinking is a part of life and that teh consequences are minimal. My Ex-girlfriends father is a pretty well-to-do principle in the rich suburbs of Houston. (Her earns probably 5x what a teacher with his same experience earns, but that's another SC thread..) but his own son, while going to his high school, would throw pool parties in their backyard and he's supply all the booze they needed for a grand old time. Whatever, another sign that this generation is going to shit...=========Shaun ==========
Halfpastniner 0 #22 January 17, 2008 Dont forget, when that particular guy was in high school, he was legally aloud to drink. I think that might be why most parents don't think a whole lot about drinking at that age because they did it. And to the OP my dad found a bottle in my car when I was 17 and he never even thought about selling my car. Prob. because he knew that he would have to drive my sorry ass to work every day BASE 1384

PLFXpert 0 #25 January 17, 2008 I will say, I was always allowed a drink or two and often drank with my parents. To each their own--as for me I think it was a good thing. I never felt "rebellious" having a drink at a party. I never felt the need to "get wasted". I never felt "cool or special" for having a drink "behind my parent's back." The car rule was the same, though. I can matter-of-factly say I have never once been behind the wheel of a car after so much as one drink. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
