Baksteen 84 #1 January 17, 2008 So i was at the trainstation the other day, when i saw an elderly couple trying to descend the stairs as the escalators were out. The old man was clearly unable to walk well, grabbing the banister with both hands, while his wife was supporting him on the other side. Being of a naively friendly disposition i made the mistake of offering them my help. The man gave me a look that hovered somewhere between suspiscious and merely loathing, and said: "Yeah, right - you're after my wallet aren't you, you scum!" The elderly are fond of saying that kids nowadays have no respect. I wonder why... New pains, things you can no longer fix but have to learn to live with, dealing with people who are impatient or don't understand--or who have given up on doing the right thing because they weren't well-received when they tried to help out once. And, there ARE a lot of people who would take advantage of an older person, just because they could. They're more vulnerable--no wonder they might also be more suspicious. Don't give up on doing the right thing because ONE person didn't want the assistance. The next one might really appreciate it!TPM Sister #

Baksteen 84 #19 January 17, 2008 That's absolutely true, but unfortunately there are a lot more negative examples than positive ones through the years. jtval 0 #20 January 17, 2008 The funny thing about old people is that they are just people. You don't think that all the young assholes grow out of it when they get old do you? Look to your left. Baksteen 84 #22 January 18, 2008 Well, that shuts me up, especially because the peroson currently on my left is a mirror That being said, I completely agree that there are a lot of assholes around, of any age. @ Sartre: I didn't say that ALL old people are evil - I love my gran! But maybe the people who complain the loudest about "kids nowadays" are the people who are simply reaping what they sowed first? Still i won't readily offer to help anymore - if I see people are coping, i leave them alone. karenmeal 0 #23 January 18, 2008 Awww, I love old people! I got to work on communication strategies with a group of 80-90 year olds with hearing loss yesterday and they were such a riot! We played the Price is Right board game and they had me laughing so hard I was in tears. That guy you encountered was probably just feeling a bit vulnerable and defenseless with his physical limitations. I wouldn't take it personally or take it as a sign that old folks are mean.
