upndownshop 0 #1 January 21, 2008 My father taught me a long time ago to react: then panic. The time we spend panicking is the time we could have spent saving our life. I can think of 5 times where this has saved my life. This poor sole had plenty of time to react but did not. I am new to scuba so my experience is limited but...see for yourself... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eejQPUyeNiY&feature=related I learned this at 16 when we took off in the 172 and we were not at the end of the runway yet, and he reached over and killed the engine at about 300'. He asked what I was going to do? I laughed and said I was going to turn the key back on. He said no the engine is dead. We discussed which field we could or could not land in and why, and why we could not do a 180. We agreed and he fired up the engine. It wasnt 2 weeks later on my motorcycle when I snuck thru one stopped car and a moving truck. To this day I know that if he had not taught me that, I would have panicked and the truck would have killed me. Instead I controlled the bike missed the truck, pulled over, got off the bike and sat down in the grass. Then the numerous, crazy, awful thoughts went thru my head as I realizes what had just happened. Thanks Dad. Just thought Id share. Ok no more youtube for me... auburnguy 0 #3 January 21, 2008 Blue hole dives are extremely dangerous. Why anyone would do one is beyond me."If you don't like your job, you don't strike! diablopilot 2 #4 January 21, 2008 Live my life by this rule...... Had an aircraft emergency during my PPL training, CFI took the controls and I calmly helped by watching and reporting gauges. Afterward the adrenaline kicked in, and we both calmed down. Afterward she asked why I was so calm. I said (and believe) "What good would come from panic? That's what you do after, when you're safe again and need to deal with the extra chemicals."---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. TheSecret 0 #5 January 21, 2008 This is sorta' off subject but may be of interest... I just came back from Dahab where this was shot. I was there for about a month diving the Blue Hole and the other hot spots. It's a beautiful place but it creeps you out walking in to the water and seeing all the plaques to dead divers, most of who are still at the bottom. Diving the Blue Hole and the Arch draws divers from all over the world, who want to test themselves. Some are prepared, others are not and that video shows the results. I believe this diver got narc'd and lost it completely. Aside from that Dahab, Egypt is a fantastic and really cheap place to dive and live. The only problem most people have there is finding a reason to leave. If you want to see someone doing almost the same dive with NO air check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrXQbucZUDALife is good

Zenister 0 #7 January 21, 2008 I wonder how many fathers still teach this... the version I got was "Panic kills more people than anything else, freak out all you want.... once you are safe."____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
