WatchYourStep 0 #1 January 23, 2008 I'm going to be taking a trip this summer for about a month. I'm either going to do the backpacking thing for a month in Europe. Staying in hostels mainly and yes I've seen the movie I may go to Australia (could I find stuff to do for a month?) If you pick other please make your suggestions. I don't think I can swing both because I believe airfare would be fairly high. Thanks Edited to add: I've only been to Jamaica and Canada so I don't care which place I visit really. hobie331 0 #3 January 23, 2008 I don't give a s**t, just don't do it in June.Actually, never been either place but have friends with a daughter studying in New Zealand and they tell me a month wasn't enough time for there. Another friend married a guy from Australia and when she went the first time it was for two weeks, again, not enough time. I would think Europe would bring many different cultures. Either way, you'll probably come back and say, "wow, that was a fast month." It's a gift, I don't try to explain it.

nigel99 617 #6 January 23, 2008 If going in June remember that is the middle of winter in Aus. You could ask Squak or Bigway?Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

skymama 37 #8 January 23, 2008 I love traveling in Europe, but keep in mind that the Dollar is very weak over there right now.She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
airtwardo 7 #9 January 23, 2008 Depends on what you want to do-see and how much $ you want to spend. We travel in Europe 4-5 times a year, and have found the later you go in the 'tourist season' the more fun you have. Cheaper and less crowded are good things IMHO, but others may disagree. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

Depending on where in Australia. Northern Aus would be nice, extreme southern Aus should be much colder. BikerBabe 0 #11 January 23, 2008 If you go to europe...go. to. SPAIN. Seems like so many people do the "tour of europe" thing and completely skip the best country there. Spain is amazing, and i found it to be very backpacker-friendly, too. and if you go to spain, check out the north. southern spain is wonderful, but northern spain (cataluña and the basque country) are just absolutely gorgeous. San Sebastian is still one of my favorite places in the world. Anyway...yeah. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! kbordson 8 #12 January 23, 2008 The main recommendation that I would have it to try to know at least basics of the language for whatever country that you choose to visit. I find it a little arrogant that so many travel abroad and expect the foreign cultures to adapt to us. Many people do speak English, and the pee pee dance will help most of the time, but knowing a few phrases will make the trip so much more enjoyable and it will show a respect for their cultures. If you don't want to learn German and Spanish and French and... Australians kinda speak English.
diablopilot 2 #13 January 23, 2008 New Zealand. If you're only taking a month, then go someplace you can cover a lot of territory easily. NZ has it all. Beaches, mountains, skydiving, beautiful towns.......I went for 2 months and I long to go back.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. If you don't want to learn German and Spanish and French and... Australians kinda speak English. But most people you will encounter have 'basic' English skills...so don't be deterred if you can't. It's when you want specifics like "Where are the bald, one legged hookers this time of day?" that native language skills come into play. On a cultural note~ My wife speaks 5 languages, better than 1/2 the time she'll ask a question in their language only to have them answer ME in English! ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
